I remember when I first found IMDB. A coworker introduced me to it. My first (full time big boy) job. I was thrilled. A website where I can kill time during the work day talking about TV and movies?!
It was awesome. Fan theories, discussion about subject or characters' motives, who can take who in a fight, debates about what happened after the movie ended - this was a site that was tailored to a geek like me.
This was during a time when LOST and Battlestar Galactica were new. Breaking Bad a few years later. These boards were hoppin' after every new episode. People would hop right on and discuss the latest episode. It was a blast.
Boards for movies like Star Wars or Terminator always had traffic. It didn't matter that they were older movies, there was an interest in discussing these franchises. One of my favorite things was the Halloween boards during the AMC marathon.
It's different now. There's no depth to the conversations. Here's a trailer. No discussion. Box office totals (honestly who cares). People might post a mini review, but no discussion. It's different and not a good different.

When they killed the original message boards and later when JC went apeshit and banned half of v2.

When they killed the original message boards and later when JC went apeshit and banned half of v2. I had some decent conversations on V2 for a bit, but Carter let trolls run rampant on boards that should have been fun and popular (Marvel, DC, Star Wars).
Quality of conversation on IMDB wasn't the same the last few years on IMDB. It resembled Filmboards. Just a bunch of low-functioning people screaming at each other. That's one of the reason they killed the boards.

Forum fatigue, perhaps? Or it could be people's attention spans decreasing from using more accessible alternatives.

It certainly was a surprisingly fun time in my online ‘career’. No other social media has that same vibe to it as the old IMDb message boards did.

No dude. By trolls you mean guys who used to goof on those franchises, franchises which even back then thoroughly deserved it (and even quality franchises can be goofed on too AFAIAC). That hilarious poster DC-Fan who would say hilarious things like ‘Steve Rogers is a war criminal’ was causing autists who prior to WandaVision were praising the the MCU as the second coming of Christ, to lose their shit. No wonder JC ignored it. ‘Ooh, someone’s making fun of the MCU, mommy!’.

I'm not even sure why I haven't ignored you, because you were one of them.

Forum fatigue, perhaps? Or it could be people's attention spans decreasing from using more accessible alternatives. I definitely think there's an attention span issue. No interest in real conversation. People just like trolling because it's "fun".

I have so many fond memories of great convos or just laughing over shared fandom and inside jokes. I was watching the Dolph Lundgren He-Man just the other day. I love that terrible movie. The part where Gwildor drinks the hot sauce is hysterical and this guy used to have this running joke about how bad he wishes he could have tasted Robby's Ribs. That it must have been sooo good. HAHA!

I don’t remember any offensive trolling, with the exception of from the Marveltards. Remember when they wanted the term ‘kiddie’ banned? You can ignore me but you can’t ignore the fact that I’m right. There was something wrong with those Marveltards. I can’t remember if you were part of that but if you were then I’m sorry if I touched a nerve.

Forum fatigue, perhaps? Or it could be people's attention spans decreasing from using more accessible alternatives. I think some of them migrated to places like Reddit. Reddit has helped fill the imdb message board void because there's subreddits out there you can find for a particular movie or show for discussions.

Some IMDB boards were even recreated as a subreddit like Film General.

Never been all that impressed with the quality of conversation there, but there's some ok ones.

Generally r/Movies is a good place to go for any recent film release.
