The first section was good. The second was "meh". That said, I'll still check out the next batch.
I think the main problem with the new series was that it was touted as a continuation of the Filmation series, when it really isn't. The show is its own thing.

I like the 2002 series. I didn’t like the Netflix series. I want a real MOTU series. It is a good fantasy premise. I've seen some episodes. Watched a few more clips. Didn't hate it, but find it to be a little.... anticlimactic.
It would have to be light. A MOTU movie that took itself too seriously would fucking bomb. A Star Wars or Marvel tone would be appropriate. Action, adventure, a little humor sprinkled in. Thor (1,2, & 3) might not be a bad model as far as visuals and tone. It will never happen though imo. If by some chance it did, Lundgren should get a role. He-Man's dad, maybe.

He-Man isn’t dead, it’s just wounded from Netflix, but it will be back. Too many people love it and even though the two Netflix cartoons sucked (I include the children cartoon they also made) the toys were big sellers so a new generation of kids will love He-Man. MOTU can suit a dark tone. It won’t bomb if it is awesome. MOTU is popular enough that people will give it a chance.

Regarding the 2002 series, it’s the second season that is awesome. The first season contains self-contained episodes but the second season has huge story arcs, the Snake Men fight Skeletor and take over Snake Mountain, characters die, Evil Lyn sells out Skeletor and comes crawling back and the last episode is a huge battle. Then Hordak is hinted at.

The original cartoon and all that followed are hokey-to-light (at best). The new cartoon is as dark as this franchise will ever get and still had a ton of light moments. This is not serious subject matter.

Eternos is the capital and its monarchy rules over much of the planet. Civilisation is ancient there and much of the technology is ancient and mysterious in origin. It was perhaps created by superior civilisations long forgotten. That could even be the origin of the sword. You don’t have to change canon too much to reduce the magical elements and still retain a great fantasy setting. It needn’t be silly. It could be great.

I'd like a movie based of the lore of the original mini-comics. I don't think the 80s movie suffered from being dark. It suffered due to being set on Earth.

I just don't believe it will ever happen. I simply don't think it's a popular enough franchise to warrant a big-screen movie.
I do often wonder what the tone would be? I think an attempt to be too serious/dark would be dismissed and flop. It would have to be action/adventure with some comedy thrown in. Christ, 90% of the characters have "Man" or "She" in their names, this isn't Shakespeare.
I didn't recognize the director by name, and haven't seen Paranorman or Boxtrolls in ages, but remember liking both a lot. Kubo and the Two Strings has great reviews too.

I did really like Kubo and the Two Strings. kuatorises did you ever catch Bumblebee (2018)? Travis Knight directed that one as well. It was a good movie. But I didn’t think it was the best one in the Transformers series like everyone else did. I’ll admit that I still like the 2007 movie the best. But I bring it up partly due to your query about how the tone should ideally be for a He-Man movie. Like an earnest sci-fi adventure story that we’d probably have seen in the ‘80s. In Bumblebee, it takes itself seriously enough, but it does poke fun at its own mythology sometimes. I think there’s a joke where John Cena (he plays a human soldier) asks aloud if the government should trust the Decepticons given their names make them sound evil.

I haven't seen Kubo, but know it has a very good reputation. I haven't seen Bumblebee either - I bailed on the Transformers movies after the 2nd one - but know it also has a good reputation. I thought the effects just got progressively worse and that just takes me out of the movies. Was there ever an official ruling on the Transformers continuity? I thought I heard Bumble was a prequel, but also heard it was it's own movie too. Then I heard Beast Wars and Bumblebee were prequels, but Beast Wars was also a standalone movie (not even connected to Bumblebee). Been ages since I saw the first Trasnformers movie - agreed, I liked it too - but I thought it was portrayed that was their first time on Earth? That's hilarious. I might have to check it out. Cena has good comedic timing. I think Thor 1 is a good model for He-Man. The current cartoon is solid. I haven't finished season 2 yet, and it's not perfect, but the animation is gorgeous.

I think it's like the FOX-Men series at this point, don't think about it too hard. And yeah, Thor 1 is not a bad approach. Kenneth Branagh might had been a good choice.
