Simple Summary( there was some conflicting reporting’s and this case takes place in Russia so mistranslation is likely):
41 year old Lyudmila Korovina was an experienced hiking instructor and survivalist labeled as a ‘master’ by her peers and students. She was known for her tough love on her students, often pushing them very hard but this tough love ultimately paid off however, as her students described her as being a good teacher that taught them confidence and crucial hiking skills.
In august 2 of 1993, Lyudmila had planned a hike with six of her students to the Khamar Daban mountain range. She was very experienced in the area which was a popular tourist spot and considered a very safe place to hike, especially in the summer. Her students had trained with her for the trip for months, and she was very close to all of them. The first of the six, and the closest to Lyudmila was 23 year old Aleksander (Sacha) Krysin. Lyudmila had known Sacha for most of his life, and considered him to be almost a son to her. The other five students were 24 year old Tatyana Filipenko, 19 old Denis Shvachkin, 17 old Valentina (Valya ) Utochenko, 16 year old Viktoriya Zalesova, and 15 year old Timur Bapanov.
August 6: 4 days in, the incident
According to Valya, after the group had breakfast, they began their descent down the mountain, but soon Sacha, who was at the back of the group, began screaming. When everyone turned to look at him, he was foaming at the mouth and bleeding from his eyes and ears( some reports say it was just their eyes). He fell to the ground, convulsing before becoming still(some say unresponsive). Lyudmila ran to his aid and instructed the others to continue on to the tree line.
Lyudmila was desperately trying to revive Sacha, but she too began exhibiting the same symptoms as him(I believe Valentina one stated that Korovina didn’t experience the symptoms so). The rest of the group had not gone far before they heard Lyudmila's screams and quickly returned to help. Lyudmila shook violently before falling on top of Sacha. Tatyana, who had arrived at Lyudmila first, was the next to pass out, clutching at her throat as if she were having trouble breathing. She horrifically made her way over to a nearby rock, where she began bashing her head against it until she became limp. Valentina proceeded to grab Viktoriya and try take her to the tree line, but she heavily resisted and even bit her hand( some say this caused her to let go but other say she took her screaming and kicking to the tree line before what happens next.)
Different reports: One reporting of the series of Event differ and say Korovina didn’t pass out till after Tatyana come over to help move the unresponsive Sacha and ordered Val to keep going to the tree line with the others which is why Valya grabbed Viktoriya and only after looking up to complain about Viktoriya refusal she then saw Tatyana bashing her head.
Denis crouched behind a rock(some say he was standing) as Viktoriya and Timur both passed out while running and died similarly, ripping their clothes off, spitting up blood, and tearing at their throats. (A few say this is when Viktoriya bit Valya actually, when Valya was trying to help her) Denis snapping to his senses, so to speak, told Valentina to grab her sleeping bag and supplies but before she could reply confirmation she had done so , Denis also collapse to the ground bleeding and Clawing his throat.
Different reports: some say Timur, Viktoriya and Denis also bashed their heads against the ground/rocks. And some say Denis fought Valya when she tried to help
August 7-10
Valya fled in fear and later set up camp and “fell unconscious” woke up the next morning and realized she need her fallen friends supplies and food and So she returned to the area. Valya spent the next four days following the power lines down the mountain, hoping for someone to find her. Eventually, she stumbled upon a river and decided to follow it. On the fourth day of her journey, the kayakers found and rescued her.
later autopsy examinations ignored (or didn’t find??) these symptoms and claimed signs of hypothermia and protein deficiency in the deceased members of the hiking group as the cause of death. Korovina was stated to have died of a heart attack.
Even though a report was filed with the police, no formal search was conducted until August 24. It took the helicopters two days to locate the bodies because Valentina had not yet been able to provide her account of events (or it was too windy?) They were found badly decomposing and bloated and most, if not all(I am unsure) where In a state of undress and “in their tights”and three were with out shoes (i am unsure if Valentina stated that all of them perform rapid undressing so this might be contradictory to her statement)
Things of note: there was an unexpected rain storm, but nothing they weren’t reportedly prepared for , the weather wasn’t anything that wasn’t manageable, and there were three other groups, I believe, one being Korovina on 16-year-old daughter, who was supposed to meet up with them with her own group on this expedition.
Valentina has refused to talk about this incident since it has happened besides once in around 2017.
All hikers were found with golden root, Korovina was known to use and forge in hiking: it is a medicinal plant
All hikers had more warmer clothes in their backpacks just ready to use if the temp becomes unbearable.

What I want to discuss is what theory would explain how Valya (Valentina) and those other groups on those mountains be left unaffected. All the main theories that I’ve heard have not been able to both answer the questions of how Valentina could unaffected as well as the other people in the area yet be also instantaneous and affect her group in the same way. Discussion on this topic is very scarce and I would love to hear anyone’s thoughts and information or help anyone learn more( I left a bunch out due to become an barely long) as I’ve been obsessed for weeks on this tragedy and I think it’s so unfair that the police at the time just brushed over this case(in my opinion).
