Background information of Wong:
Wong Ka Ting was 14 years old when she went missing. She was studying in Kowloon Sam Yuk Secondary school (九龍三育中學). She is the third daughter out of eight children. Her father are often teased by their neighbors and got the nickname “Dor Jai Gong (多仔公, which means a man with many children)”
The secondary school informed the police that Wong’s grade were good when she was in form 1 and form 2(first and second year of middle school) , but when she was promoted to form 3, her grade became very bad. She was also often late and even skipped school. The police found out that Wong had been bullied by other classmates because of her humble background and introverted personality, there was also one time her uniform was burned by a cigarette. Wong has been verbally abused and physically assaulted by the bullies but the parents of these bullies are rich and in a good relationship with the school’s higher ups, therefore the teachers always ignored Wong when she asked for help. Wong tried to tell her parents about the bullying, but her parents were neglectful and didn’t take her seriously.
Her missing
On 20th of May, 2009, Wong left home for school at 7 am and she never returned home. Her older sister went to check her online chatroom and found a message from a female (her identity was unclear at that time) who said Wong will not come home tonight, she will stay at a friend’s house instead. However, her family did not pay much attention to the message.
At 3 in the morning the next day, Wong's school bag was left at the Tuen Mun Pier. The staff found it and found her belongings and mobile phone. However, the mobile phone did not have a calling card. There was also an A4 paper "suicide note", which was written for one year. Later, the content roughly stated that she fell in love with a girl named Lee Mei Yan, and then fell in love with a male ghost. She even asked herself whether it was stupid to jump into the sea for a ghost (to join him in the world of the dead).
This is the translation of her full letter: (please note that the pictures are in very bad quality and it is handwritten, so this is a rough translation!)
To me one year from now:
How are you? Do you know the date of today? It's May 20th, 520! :) (520 can mean i love you in chinese internet slang) I wonder what you were like a year ago? Did you remember you jumped into the sea for a ghost? Without knowing if it is real or not, did you keep the promise? It’s already been a year, I really want to know, did you have a relationship with Lee Mei Yan? Or maybe you already forgot who she is. If you didn’t fall in love with her in the beginning, will you still fall in love with a ghost and be stupid enough to jump into the sea, just so you can be with him in the world of the dead? I asked myself, and I think I am a very stupid person. I hope that you are still alive on this earth and stop doing stupid stuff like this. You make many people worry about you because of your stupid actions. Did you remember about Hang and X( can’t read it, but I guess it is a name) , they are very worried about you, even though they are just online friends. No matter how I was a year ago, if you actually survived, please cherish your life.
May 20th, from You a year ago
The staff did not take it seriously when they saw the "suicide note" and only informed a female classmate of Wong to retrieve her schoolbag without calling the police. However, the classmate ignored it. Wong did not show up for many days. On May 25, her father finally went to the Yau Ma Tei Police Station to report the matter, and the West Kowloon Regional Missing Persons Unit followed up, but to no avail.
When the police carried out extensive work in Mong Kok District, they discovered that Wong had repeatedly visited various divination supplies shops and the homes of numerologists, seeking various spells and metaphysical methods to interpret fortunes, which made her friends find it strange and incomprehensible. Later, based on clues provided by the family, the police found MSN chatroom records, which recorded many bizarre conversations. It records that Wong told many of her online friends that she enjoys playing with ouija boards, and met many male ghosts and female ghosts. She claimed that everyone lived in harmony and lived in peace. Sometimes when she is frustrated at school, her ghost friends will comfort her and make her happy, and become friends with her. The police also found in the records a conversation in which she borrowed 3,000 HKD from a person named Ah Man and he intended to have a sexual relationship with her. In the end, the police found him, and after rigorous interrogation, they found that he had nothing to do with the disappearance.
About her letter:
Police were able to find Lee Mei Yan(李美欣), whom Wong has mentioned in her letter. Turns out Lee was one of Wong's classmates. Lee told the police that she had confessed her romantic feelings to Wong, but Wong rejected her. Wong told her that she was in love with a male ghost. Lee also mentioned that a few months ago, Wong had invited her and other friends to skip school and play with the ouija board in an abandoned building. During the game, Wong asked the spirit “will you fall in love with me” and the spirit replied with a “yes”. Lee told the police that after Wong got her answer, the atmosphere became weird and uncomfortable. Lee also said that she did not join the game because she was scared, but she felt dizzy after the game.
Aftermath
In mid-June, Wong’s father was eager to find his daughter. He held banners at Sam Yuk secondary School and several places in Kowloon, saying "The school shields students, bullies classmates, murders classmates, give my daughter back." He was arrested and taken to the police station. The couple once again posted signs on the streets in Tuen Mun District to look for her, still believing that their daughter would come home one day. He also publicly blamed the police for not solving this case quickly.
While the father was holding banners everywhere and posting notices on the streets looking for his daughter, some scammers falsely claimed to have discovered Wong’s traces based on the information and said they would provide the clue for a fee. However, when the father was about to pay the money in the MTR station, the MTR staff warned him that this might be a scam. The staff then called the police and the scammer was arrested. The police continued to search for Wong through notices from various district police stations. It was not until more than two months later that the police decided to classify her as a missing person. When they gave up the search, there was still no trace of her, as if she had disappeared from the world. After notifications from the media and the police, basically the whole of Hong Kong knew about her disappearance. However, no one ever came forward to provide clues about her actions or her death. She was neither alive nor dead.
Conclusion
It’s been 14 years, but Wong is still missing. Everyone in this girl’s life absolutely failed her. Her family is extremely neglectful. Her own family does not seem to care when their 14 years old daughter did not return home after school and only reported her missing after 5 days. Nobody ever gives her a helping hand even though she has asked for help multiple times, it makes me angry and sad at the same time.
The school is even worse. seriously shame on everyone at that school.
Personally, I feel like Wong has suffered and struggled a lot mentally. Maybe all the ouija board and supernatural stuff were meant to be an escape route from the harsh reality? Maybe she was so deep in her fantasy, she can no longer determine what is real and what is not.
The letter she left behind is also worth noticing: according to the letter, it seems like Wong is the one who fell in love with Lee, but Lee claimed that Wong is the one who rejected her? Is it possible that Wong was also struggling with her sexuality and had difficulties admitting that she is in love with a girl? To the point that she convinces herself that she fell in love with a male ghost? It is not clear that Wong was interested in females or not, the only thing we know is that she likes to wear gender neutral clothing, which does not explain anything.
Nobody but gods knows about her whereabouts. but wherever you are, Ka Ting, I hope you can find peace.
