If you go through Chrome, there is a way to reset it to an odder version. Its not perfect, but its better than the new layout.
Youtube has a few videos on how to do it.

I haven't notice a difference. Then I use Firefox all the time.

I haven't notice a difference. Then I use Firefox all the time. For some, it changed months ago. For most users, it changed about a week ago. And for some, the change hasn't occurred as of yet.

I noticed a layout change a couple of days ago, but yesterday it was back to normal.

It probably allows them to drive even more advertising into your retinas in some non-obvious way.
Whatever the reason, you can guarantee it was done for their benefit and not yours.

They have no real competitors, so yeah they can get away with this annoying shit

I don't see much of a difference with Chrome. I just looked. They both have thumbnails. Chrome is a little bit bigger. They only difference I can see is in the color. Chrome's color is different. It seems to be kinda blue and light yard green. The kinda of green when the grass hasn't been watered in a long time. I'm trying to say I noticed a bluish tint in the videos. But the wallpaper is a light yard green.

Iβve not noticed anything different about the layout. But then Iβm using Brave browser, which blocks ads and Iβve not had a problem for several weeks (not since the YouTube vs. Brave ad-block arms race that, I assume, is still ongoing β and that the latter is presently winning).

I gave up on using YouTube in the browser just because of how slow it is. I use third party apps like NewPipe on Android and FreeTube on PC.
I don't remember where the comment section was on YouTube when it first launched, but I distinctly remember the video description was to the right of the video instead of underneath, so it seems youtube is reverting to its classic look.

There may have been slight alterations but nothing that would cause a thread. Haven't noticed any drastic change in YouTube.
