This is not about voting.
The point of the census is to count people, not hunt down undocumented aliens. There are millions of people here illegally. They need to be counted. If they're afraid they will deported they'll just lie or throw away the census form.
Yes, for voter registration ask if they're a citizen. It's irrelevant on a census.

I understand this is about the census, and that's about federal funding that goes to those states, but it also determines how many votes in the electoral college as well as representation. I completely get it that an illegal would potentially be afraid to report that they're living there if there are repercussions, and this is about counting the people who reside, legally or illegally, within each state. On the separate matter of voting, you do not have to be a legal citizen to vote. How the hell is that even acceptable?

Whether it's strictly enforced is another thing. But it's hard enough to get most people and especially most Latinos and minorities to the polls. I just don't think there are throngs of lettuce pickers and busboys clamoring to vote. This has always been an immigrant nation. There have always been those legally here waiting for citizenship, and illegals as well trying to be part of the system. It makes sense to count them. They're here. They receive public services but they also work and contribute to the system. They must be counted.

You only need to prove you're a "resident" which doesn't mean jack squat. And you do understand that by counting them, it also affects the voting system by increasing power in the electoral college and representation, and thereby affecting government....government of a country they don't give a damn about, or they want to be here so bad but they don't want to get here legally? Not buying it. I'm all for immigration because I'm the product of immigration. Third generation. But they came here legally, and didn't sneak into the borders. I guess you might have missed all those video exposes that were done demonstrating southern states encouraging DACA voters to just show up? Why should an illegal "resident" of our country get a say in how this country is run? They shouldn't.

Why should an illegal "resident" of our country get a say in how this country is run? They shouldn't. You must know the question of excessive verification to vote was hashed out in the 60's during the Civil Rights movement. In southern states blacks were denied the vote through various schemes: requiring picture IDs, literacy tests, proof of citizenship (the descendants of slaves must show a proof of citizenship?). When I went to get a passport a few years ago I had to wait a few weeks to get a copy of my birth certificate. That was no big deal for me to get a passport. But if I came to vote and was asked for a birth certificate or absolute proof or citizenship that day? Even many stable American citizens can't show this "proof" on a whim. This was used in the past to exclude 'undesirable' voters. There is legal precedent against such restrictions on voting.

For some election you hadn't seen coming, you mean?

For some election you hadn't seen coming, you mean? Dude, I don't carry my birth certificate in my wallet and never take it to the polls to vote.
