I saw this when it came out and don't remember thinking much either way about it. Just ordinary, from what I remember.
I recently saw a couple of reviews saying how great it was so I thought I'd give it another go to see what all the fuss was about.
The first half is "yeah, okay" but the second half is "wow, that's incredibly well done."
The battle scenes rival Saving Private Ryan in their 'right there' realism and the decaying city and people have excellent attention to detail.
Solid 8/10.

Think I'll pass on this one. No, you won't just "pass on this one." What do you think this is? Back in college days? "Uhhhh uhhhhh pass the reefer man, not going to class today uhhhhh." Nein! You will watch it and you will report back to the group with your findings because we are winners and we have discipline! Chop chop!

Ven I votch a movie that's shit, it's my own choice of shit! So nein, I vil not votch it! I see, one of those 'freedom of choice' hippies, are you? Anyway, the point is that it's not shit, it's really well done. However, I will not pursue the matter because I have better things to do with my time. Such as telling Hux he's a twat. So good day to you, sir.

From a more lengthy review I wrote for the Classic Film weekly thread a while back:
The year is 2027. It has been 18 years since the last baby was born in 2009. The world is in chaos. Refugees are flooding into Britain which has one of the world’s few functioning governments. After Theo Faron (Clive Owen) is almost killed when a terrorist bomb explodes near him, he is contacted by ex-lover Julian (Julianne Moore). She now is the leader of one of the terrorists organizations. She gets in touch with Theo for his help in a plan that may save humanity.
Alfonso Cuarón masterfully directs, using several stunning long takes of a minute or more especially late in the film when Theo is trying to avoid a war scene and protect the most important person in the world. From a novel by P.D. James who is otherwise famous for a series of British police procedurals. Also with Michael Caine, excellent as always, as Theo’s old friend, an aging hippy still peddling ganga. Chiwetel Ejiofor, underrated English actor, is Julian’s second in command. A must see.
