The thing that makes me feel the most pride is not the Empire period - it's easy to dominate - but the prescience of thought to transition from an Empire to a Commonwealth. Co-operating and respecting each other's freedoms is much harder and much more to be valued.

Encouraging a select minority to subjugate their fellow citizens in your name is indeed a skill to be valued.

No surprise there, of course - unless it's your communism, where everyone is equal <*loud cough*>, you won't be happy, despite it creating slave conditions in every example of where it has been enacted.
