I've never thought of the bible being a complete work of fiction - I believe plenty of it is based on real events and people. What I don't buy into are the reasons it provides for things happening - that's where it has been embellished for a human purpose, imo.
So this just boils down to 'standard astronomical event' or 'god sent it'. No-one is ever likely to know and the argument hasn't moved a bit.

Flying Monkeys, Well, the prevailing point of view is that all early " Biblical history" was recorded so many centuries after the events supposedly had happened, it could have been nothing but invention of the authors. We do, of course, have many examples of 1. Oral tradition keeping stories for many generations ("The Iliad") and 2. Basing our entire understanding of an epoch on very few source or just one (Early Chinese history or Ancient Egypt etc). But here we are talking about 1,500 years at least. So if a story\legend can survive that long in a pre-writing society, how much else in the world's mythologies is true?

Some, for sure, but one thing about storytellers is they love to embellish because attention is what they seek, not historical record. It's the old "based on a true story" caption as the film starts - you know the true story was a lot more boring than what's coming but there's an element of truth in it.
