It was very entertaining but I wouldn't say it was anything spectacular. Quite a few convenient plot devices.
I also though Abbie Cornish was totally miscast. Aside from being twenty years younger than Woody Harrelson, she was way too hot.
I liked the theme of violence and anger leading to nothing but violence and anger. Ending was nice and vague. And the racist finding redemption was a nice touch for those who want the world to be more than black and white.

I put it on, 58 minutes in.
This is engrossing and excellently acted. Sam Rockwell is a stand-out performance.
Just had the scene where he goes over the road and beats up the advertising guy. Fuck me, that is well made drama.
It's very interesting how what sounds fairly mundane is so interesting - a small community in which a bomb goes off (the billboards) and how each character deals with it differently.
I can see why it won so many awards.

Abbie Cornish ... was way too hot. She was way over-plump, if that's what you mean.

@hux, But that's not her in this film.
In this film, she is plump bird with a sturdy frame, a large bottom and manly shoulders.
Shoulders you would like....

Film was good but packed with fantasy shite. What did you consider to be fantasy? The amount of dopey crap that goes on. A rape, a murder, a rapist, a tortured black, a cop with cancer, a dwarf, a wife-beater, a suicide, a trophy girlfriend, a deranged mother, a racist redemption, etc etc. Maybe on Corrie but for a movie... it's all a little contrived. It was fun to watch for those very reasons.

What's the opposite of realistic? It's called script writing. You need characters and events. You think films should be like real life? Where fuck all happens day after day? Yeah, good luck with that film. Oh wait, you want northern git Ken Loach kitchen sink dramas, where fuck all actually does happen on film. Yes, fascinating.

There's drama and then there's melodrama. This film edged just a little too much to the latter (but entertaining).

Don't pretend Kes isn't a fookin' classic. Never seen it. A child having a kestrel? Too much fantasy.
