Frozen foods lose freshness and quality after the expiration date. But they are still edible and won't kill you. They just don't taste as good the longer they sit in the deep freeze.

I would have thought that as long as they were "in date" when frozen they should be fine.

They'll be fine - I've had salmon that was three years old and stuff (Dad had a huge chest freezer and was a fishing nut - I had months worth of food when he died) and it was fine. Maybe a bit dry, but fine.

If it has turned grey and smells funny then you better not. Yes expired frozen meat can make you very sick. Sick enough to have to go to the hospital.

Just in case anyone is interested, I've finished the whole box and only got a little botulism.
They are fine, tasted normal, no illness.

Translation is: You happened across an abandoned grocery store or someone's abandoned house in the midst of the war. The power is still on but the circumstances of the food is in question. You are wondering if it is safe to eat.
Possibly it didn't occur to you that under those circumstances it might have been left that way on purpose as a trap.
Given an urban warfare situation I know I would set a trap like that for the enemy. Carefully taking out the best goodies out of the freezer without unplugging it, things like the ground beef, the sausage, the pizza especially the frozen fried chicken tenders, to thaw on the counter just long enough to be 100% dangerous but not long enough to be obvious that it was re-frozen. The ice cream would be left in the freezer without thawing to make the deception complete. So that even someone experienced might not spot it.
As the saying goes, an Army travels on it's stomach, and if you want to effectively disable the enemy but you don't have any conventional weapons, that is probably one of the more effective ways to do it. Invading armies encroaching on suburban civilian towns are almost always scavengers. It might not be kosher as far as the rules of war goes but under those conditions where you are a civilian forced to leave your home because on an invading army. Just about anything you can pull off without getting yourself killed, pretty much goes.
Just so you know that those are the only circumstances under which I would ever do that. Because it wouldn't just be resentment at having lost my home, it would also be a matter of not letting the enemy have my town or nation without consequences.
Sort of a difficult concept to explain that strays a bit off topic.

When I first started my gig with my government job a coworker had worked at Sea World which gave its workers a free turkey for Christmas. She had a couple in her freezer & wondered if they were still good so she checked with the Farm & Home advisor who said frozen meats last indefinitely short of freezer burn, but the taste will deteriorate. www.eatbydate.com/whats-in-a-date-shelf-life/

On Monday morning I had carne asada made from some stew meat that had been out in the freezer for about 2 years past it's expiration date. Making carne asada was about the only way to salvage it. Even after being slow simmered in sauce for about 2 hours. It was still very tough and chewy with a slightly scary undertow flavor that was subtle but still there.
I didn't have any ill after effects besides a very wicked case of indigestion.
Not recommended...
