I'd have gone a different direction had the question asked for favourite. To me favourite and best may or may not be the same. Absolutely. While most Beatles fans would consider Sgt. Pepper their best album, my favorite is probably--mind you, I say probably-- Revolver. Especially the British edition, which contains more tracks. So, "best" song? Well, I'm kind of torn between "Eleanor Rigby" and "Across the Universe." I would vote Schindler's List as best film, but my favorites are Nashville, Godfather, Back to the Future.... The first 2 make the Best list, but behind Oskar.
Pepper has taken a tumble over the years among both fans and critics, maybe due to having a more dated feel. Abbey Rd has taken the top spot with Revolver a close 2nd.
My favorite Beatles songs are While My Guitar Gently Weeps, It's Only Love (which John hated after finding Yoko), A Hard Day's Night, Hey Bulldog... I'd definitely put Eleanor Rigby in the Best category.

This is a tall order, you know. Deciding the best Beatles song.....it's right up there with deciding the best William Shatner movie. Narrowing it down to a top ten would be tough enough. Nevertheless, I talked it over with my gal last night and we settled on this one.

Interesting about "It's Only Love." Though I'd read somewhere that he hated that song, I hadn't heard why. Thanks for the info. Pepper has taken a tumble over the years among both fans and critics, maybe due to having a more dated feel. Another tidbit I hadn't heard--most likely because I largely stopped reading music criticism somewhere before the turn of the century. Too "dated"? Maybe that album makes people uncomfortable because it's too reminiscent of the era where a lot of us boomers truly thought we could change the world...only to arrive at the disappointing and frustrating realization that, in some ways, we've fallen further behind than we got to in the sixties. Abbey Road--coming just a couple of years after Sgt. Pepper--seems to me, overall, more lighthearted and perhaps less overpowering than its predecessor. <<shrugs>> Sometimes I feel tempted to give the White Album pride of place over both Pepper and Road...but with that one, I'm not sure whether to put it under "Favorite" or "Best." By the way, I think I'm going to go back to my post on "Best Beatles Song" and turn my "torn-between-two" songs to a three-way tie, as I just remembered a song that definitely deserves consideration for the top spot.

At the moment it’s Eleanor Rigby but it’ll probably be a different one next time I’m asked. I have watched Yellow Submarine more times than I care to count (in theatres and at home), yet that animation of "Eleanor Rigby" still never fails to choke me up. Thank you for posting it.
