There is a book by Ken MacLeod (a Scottish Sci-Fi author) which describes a near future in which religion has been abolished almost everywhere. There was a major war (he always blows up the Middle-East in his books) somewhat related to a religious conflict or conflicts and by the end everyone was so disgusted by faith...
Do you think something like this can happen in our world any time soon?

With all due respect, Pilar, you simply described your attitude towards religion. My question was: will humanity ever reject religion and what would it take?

With all due respect, Pilar, you simply described your attitude towards religion. My question was: will humanity ever reject religion and what would it take?Climb down off my back. My reply is based in the plot synopsis for why people are rejecting religion in the story: After decades of religious inspiration or exacerbation of terrorism, fundamentalism, apocalyptic wars, creationism, climate-change denial, women's oppression, poverty, ignorance and disease, it was payback time. And the results per the narrative : In a variety of forms, secularism had swept the board in all the advanced countries. No politician with any religious taint had a chance of national election. Every prohibition influenced by religion had been repealed. Every trace of religious influence had been excluded from the education system, and no exemptions from the secular state education system were allowed.
The above is a total fiction, even laughable to think it could possibly happen any time soon. You are crazy to even ask the question. You like this answer better? Here’s some good ole time religion for you: Go To Hell.

Seriously? I hope you'll get better soon. No matter if say I'm well or not, you'll have a beef with it. Not at all. You said you have a head cold and, it feels to me, it made you a little cranky. I did not dismiss your comment. I simply wanted your opinion about something else. Religion, after all, is your thing.

Otherwise, the answer to that question can be a simple yes or no and that's no fun.

So you think this will never happen? For the most of humanity? No. The content of the religion will change, but it will not go extinct.
