What's Saturday boy? A kid that fills in for full time crew on weekends? Something like that, we were mostly doing this while going to college and I’d also pop in after college for a few days. I never had any training on becoming a butcher but helped with wrapping and packing plus cleaning up at the end of the day. For a gag they got me to rearrange and tidy up the freezer and locked me in there for about 30 minutes. I knew they weren’t planning on actually killing me so I just got on with the job. Fun times.

Hope you left before all that happened. NEI Parsons, Shields Road, Newcastle. Depressing place. My first full time employers ended up being investigated by That’s Life before the police became involved and some of the management got jailed. I worked in the art department so wasn’t involved in the illegal side of the business and left before all that happened. I missed the episode but was told by an ex-colleague that it was very funny.

What was the business and what was the illegal activity? If it was on That's Life, dodgy fire alarms, dodgy driveways, strange-shaped vegetables?

It was a business telephone directory where they vastly over inflated the amount of directories that were actually distributed and people rightly said they were conned out of money. What we did in the art department was try to cram as much text, logos and occasional photos as we could into these adverts and correct amusing errors like “shit work” instead of “shift work”.

Dishwasher at Howard Johnson’s Restaurant in Binghamton, New York. Howard Johnson’s was a huge chain of Motel/Restaurants in the US back in the day. I’m not sure if they exist anymore. They all had signature orange roofs. I still have burn marks on my hands from that job. It was awful. Good memories, though.

Clean-up boy in the bakery, the lowest of the low. Minimum plus five cents. Or was it ten? I don't recall. This photo was taken when the bakery was separate and to the right. By the time I started they had moved it in-store and to the left. About the time I stopped working there, Sears pulled out, and that whole section of town became a gigantic den of crime.
