Looks like the poor bugger has been taken short. Anyway, here is Q3 3. The sequence u1, u2, u3, ... is defined by un+1 = k − 24/un
where u1= 2
and where k is an integer. Given that u1 + 2u2 + u3 = 0 (a) show that 3k2 − 58k + 240 = 0 3 marks (b) Find the value of k, giving a reason for your answer.
2 marks (c) Find the value of u3
1 mark
(a) If u1 + 2u2 + u3 = 0
and u1= 2
Then 2 + 2x(k - 24/2) + (k - 24/(k - 24/2) = 0 2 + 2k - 24 + k - 24/(k - 12) = 0 2(k - 12) + 2k(k - 12) - 24(k-12) + k(k - 12) - 24 = 0 2k - 24 + 2k2 - 24k - 24k + 288 + k2 - 12k - 24 = 0 3k2 - 58k + 240 = 0
(b)
k(3k - 58) = -240 k(58 - 3k) = 240
k must be a positive integer and 3k < 58, i.e. k < 20 Also k and (58 - 3k) are factors of 240 k can be 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15 For each of those, (58 - 3k) would be 52, 49, 46, 43, 40, 34, 28, 22, 13 For each combination, k(58 - 3k) = 104, 147, 184, 215, 240... > k = 6
(c)
u3 = (k - 24/(k - 24/2) = (6 - 24/(6 - 12)) = (6 - -4) u3 = 10
^^ Well? mowlickAnd where's the one with the square cut up into areas? I have an idea for it.

Maths. Lol. Americans never say it like that. We just say "math". Math is a singular concept. Do the math. Yes, I know you say it wrongly. Math is an abbreviation of mathematics, which is plural. Do you miss the 's' off other abbreviations in plural? "I have five phone"? I'd say it's singular: “Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” — Albert Einstein. He didn't say "Pure mathematics are..." From a British mathematician: “Mathematics is one of the oldest of the sciences; it is also one of the most active, for its strength is the vigor of perpetual youth.” — Andrew Forsyth

Just sounds odd saying "math". And being a patriotic Brit, I shall continue with maths no matter what! Thank you for the research.

As is poverty.
According to the BBC, Scots living in the most deprived areas of Scotland are almost 16 times as likely to die from drug misuse compared to people living in the least deprived areas. This means that pretty soon there won't be any poor Scots because they have all overdosed and all that will remain will be the middle class.
Give the SNP its due, it has an exciting approach to economics.

But (much to Toastie’s annoyance) poor people breed faster so their levels keep fairly stable.
