Ronald Colman and Basil Rathbone in If I Were King 1938 directed by Frank Lloyd. Not history, but very entertaining, and no wonder since one of the screenwriters was Preston Sturges.

I Was an Adventuress (1940) Erich von Stroheim, Vera Zorina and Peter Lorre are a trio of jewel thieves and con artists who've set their sights on wealthy Richard Greene, with whom Zorina predictably falls in love. When she resolves to reform, she and her erstwhile partners try to outwit each other as they set out to sabotage her plans and pull her back into their game. It's a light and fluffy affair, worthwhile almost exclusively for the comic byplay between the constantly bickering von Stroheim and Lorre. Directed by Gregory Ratoff, who spent a career on both sides of the camera and is likely best remembered as the hypochondriac producer Max Fabian in All About Eve.

I need to see that one, Doghouse6 . I've been on a von Stroheim kick lately, lol. That sounds like a good kick to be on. I think I've seen no more than ten or twelve of his sound films (I single those out because his voice contributed so much to his persona), and this von Stroheim is just not quite like any of the ones I've seen elsewhere. He does only the tiniest moderation of his stern Teutonic demeanor to achieve the lightness the material requires. Peter Lorre is, as always, pitch-perfect. While Zorina's acting range was limited, she compensated with a spirited personality. Greene was given little to do beyond being agreeably pleasant as the romantic interest and Ratoff's direction might have injected more sparkle in some scenes, but these shortcomings are likewise compensated for by appearances of reliable character players like Cora Witherspoon, Fritz Feld and Sig Ruman lending their customary eccentricity to the enterprise. Uneven but has its moments and, I'd say, just the thing for a von Stroheim kick. He truly dominates. Oh, I should add that it's available on YouTube in a decent enough copy. I'd supply the URL but YouTube's not letting me link to it.

Kay Kendall, Peter Finch and Muriel Pavlow in Simon and Laura 1955 directed by female director Muriel Box. Satire/comedy on early live TV dramas, married acting couple on the verge of divorce, finds success as TV soap stars playing a happy couple, the opposite of what they are when cameras are shut off.
