What are some of your favorite films either filmed during or set in the Great Depression? One requirement: they must reflect/address the impact of the Depression on some or all of the characters. And these can be films from all countries, because it was a world-wide depression I have many favorites, but for now will limit myself to these (all American): The Grapes of Wrath / John Ford (1940) Sullivan's Travels / Preston Sturges (1941) Bonnie and Clyde / Arthur Penn (1967) Places in the Heart / Robert Benton (1984)

Paper Moon 1973 directed by Peter Bogdanovich. Con man.
King Kong 1933 starts in depression era New York but not sure if it counts, and the same goes for Cabaret 1972 Berlin.
Seabiscuit 2003 "underdog" racehorse true story during depression era.
They Shoot Horses, Don't They? 1969, the marathon dances.
This Property Is Condemned 1966, small-town Mississippi.
Emperor of the North (1973) railway hobos.
Was it the depression that saw the rise of the hobos?

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) - Got chain gangs, klan rallies, bank robbers, and impoverished farmers.
King Kong (2005) - Big deal in the first act with a montage of how New Yorkers struggled to get by. This plays a role in the heroine Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) agreeing to the expedition to Skull Island (though she's initially told the destination is Singapore).
Porco Rosso (1992) - Anime film by Hayao Mayazaki that happens to be set in Italy and the Adriatic Sea circa 1929. It's mentioned that the economic decline has led to an exodus of men looking for work whilst fascist movements gain power in the background.

I've only seen the first one, politicidal, but I loved it. Missed the 2005 version of King Kong, and am completely unfamiliar with Porco Rosso, but it sounds wonderful. I think I'd really enjoy it, so I'll see if I can find it. Thanks for the introduction. |
