Another important factor was the development of the Haber process for producing ammonia, making Germany self sufficient in the production of nitrates for explosives.

How is it taught in the US, the Great War/WW1, given America's lack of participation until the final year or so? Is it played down?

Franz Ferdinand Trench, trench, trench Lusitania trench, trench, trench US goes to war trench, trench, trench Armistice
That changed a lot in 2014, for the 100th anniversary. Of course, I went to school in the 70's when history was barely taught.

"history was barely taught" Do you mean world history, or just that only American history was taught?

"history was barely taught" Do you mean world history, or just that only American history was taught? World history. Many thought history was "boring". I think the 70's was a bad time for history here. When my daughter went to school, the curriculum was much better. Sign 'o the times

I noticed years ago when I was watching the US version of a UK quiz game that whilst the UK version would have many questions on World events, every single question I saw on the US version was related to American events, I guess the insularity is a long held thing.

History is my favorite subject now, but when i was in school i found history extremely boring, because the teachers made it boring.

I'd probably be a meteorologist now if I liked my Geography teacher better when I was 14-16. Not that she was a bad teacher to be fair to her but she was strict and piled a lot of work on and I was a lazy good-for-nothing.

Obviously events are important, but long-term developments obviously play their parts too. The world powers had carved up the rest of the world between them and were running out of places to exploit and so needed to turn on one another.
