Back on the old board I defended this one—pretentious to the point of absurdity, sure, but I was amused by that—and said it would eventually get a reputation as underrated.
But I tried watching it on HBO Max the other day and was just flat-out bored. Yeah, the Citizen Kane steal and a giant bat monster jumping out at Ben Affleck were overblown fun, but by the time we got to Mark Zuckerberg and Holly Hunter (a Democratic senator from Kentucky? Clearly an alternate universe) talking about Granny’s peach tea, I had to shut it off.
Problem is, HBO Max only has the director’s cut (“ultimate edition”), while I originally watched the theatrical cut. (The scenes with Amy Adams captured by terrorists are so pointless and so dull, and in the director’s cut they go on forever.) So I was wondering if anyone else thought the ultimate edition was considerably worse than the theatrical.
Or maybe I’ll try watching the theatrical and still be bored and realize why everyone hated this flick when it came out.

Both cuts are pretty drab and the ultimate cut does explain more things, but drags on more as a result. I think there are some really good things about the film but the bad elements really hold it back from being actually good overall.

I think there is something of a cult following for it. Yeah it’s a bloody mess. But there was stuff I genuinely liked such as Ben Affleck’s Batman, the Apokolips dream sequence, and of course Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. I’m not even against the idea of a “versus” crossover but they made it so busy with the Justice League tie-ins and weird plot points (like that goddamn jar of piss). Weird how Lex Luthor and Doomsday were both in this movie and yet a simple henchman such as KGBeast seemed more intimidating. In retrospect, perhaps Jesse Eisenberg would have been more fitting as Glorious Godfrey.

Speaking at a Q&A at Snyder's Full Circle event hosted by Vero, the director revealed why he thinks the response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was so divisive. Check out the full exchange below:
Question: "Well this film, in particular, you created so many layers for the storytelling in the characters, and I think you have to want to make an effort to dig a little deeper…"
Snyder: "Yes, but I think that probably is what caused the movie to be so polarizing. I think, and maybe I’m wrong, but I feel like a lot of people went into the movies for going like, ‘Oh, it’s the superhero romp, right? Let’s have fun with it. And we gave them this sort of hardcore deconstructivist, heavily layered, experiential modern mythological superhero movie that needs…that you really need to pay attention to. That was not cool [for them]. That’s not something anyone wanted to do. They were like, ‘What? No! That’s exhausting. How about, why do they fight at night?’ I hate that.”
...Is that what they call a jar of piss these days?

I think the ultimate cut improves the film but it's weakest of Zack Snyder DC trilogy if we are excluding the theatrical cut of Justice League.
There is like 5 different movies in BvS and that's the main problem.
Don't hate it though...

The movie is a Man of Steel sequel, a Batman story, a Batman Vs Superman movie, a pre Justice League movie and as if that's not enough, it still adapts the Death of Superman comic. Naturally, it's a giant mess.

Shouldve easily made $2billion but it was squandered. Most underwhelming film ever

Yeah, there’s nothing layered or deep about it. Ironically I think its the lack of content that made people hate it. The whole plot is just super contrived with the singular goal of getting Batman and Superman to fight. Its paper thin, despite of all its pretentiousness.

I'll be honest, I wouldn’t mind the contrivance if the movie weren’t boring… Yes, why Batman decides he hates Superman is super goofy, but at least on first viewing I kinda let the goofiness wash over me. But, as I wrote, I just found the movie boring on rewatch. And that to me is the unforgivable sin.

I think the opening scene in BVS when we see where Bruce Wayne was during the battle of Metropolis sets it up well enough. From his perspective, yeah I get why he'd be distrusting of a being like Superman. You don't need all this extra stuff to get there. It'd shave off at least 30 minutes.

I wouldn’t mind the contrived motives if it didn’t have this sort of icy smugness to it (as most Snyder movies do). Its just a cold cold movie to me. Snyder acts like it has profound content when there isn’t really much to it beyond the paper thin. If it actually had just embraced being a fun campy “VS” movie it might have worked.

I haven’t watched the Theatrical Cut in a while, but I like the Ultimate Edition a bit more. It definitely fills in the gaps that made the TC feel so choppy.
Still not a great movie imo. It’s got great parts and cool ideas, but it just didn’t come together as well as it could or should have.

Its not paced very well. The main problem is the story is not interesting enough to justify a long run time.

Goyer talks about it during an interview:
Shortly after Marvel Studios struck gold with the launch of Iron Man and the MCU, Warner Bros. set the wheels in motion for its own shared DC Comics universe with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. Though there were a few bright spots here and there, the DCEU (as it was unofficially dubbed) didn't reach the same levels of success, and there was a perception that the studio rushed into things in an attempt to compete with Marvel.
WB execs often denied this when asked about it during interviews, but writer David S. Goyer has confirmed that this is exactly what WB's mindset was while chatting to the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Goyer tells host Josh Horowitz that he feels Warners should’ve developed a standalone Superman sequel instead of rushing into Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
“I know the pressure we were getting from Warner Bros., which was, ‘We need our MCU! We need our MCU!’ And I was like let’s not run before we walk,” Goyer said.
“The other thing that was difficult at the time was there was this revolving door of executives at Warner Bros. and DC. Every 18 months someone new would come in. We were just getting whiplash. Every new person was like, ‘We’re going to go bigger!'”
“I remember at one point the person running Warner Bros. at the time had this release that pitched the next 20 movies over the next 10 years," he continued.
"But none of them had been written yet! It was crazy how much architecture was being built on air. This is not how you build a house.”
Goyer was also asked about the decision to have Supes kill General Zod during the climatic battle, and whether he anticipated the scene being so controversial.
He says he felt this was the right decision for the more "grounded" story they were telling, before adding that he wrote a scene with Jonathan Kent taking Clarke hunting that would have teed up the Zod moment, but had to cut it due to time constraints.
