What are some bands like this. That have 70's music that you think doesn't suck?
I'm asking about this time. Because by the end of the 70's progressive rock was either dead, or the remaining progressive rock sucked.
elp genesis with peter gabriel yes jethro tull king crimson
I'm probably forgetting one of the main ones though.
Which of those bands have music from the 70's that doesn't suck?
If there's one thing I do know about these bands, is that in order to appreciate and or understand their music. You kinda have to listen to all albums starting with the first one.
As opposed to trying to listen to one of their best songs first. Imo, that aint gonna work.

Depends if you are going for the early "pastoral psych" which was very "English", stuff like Syd era Floyd or the more bombastic and ploddy prog of ELP and King Crimson. Gabriel's Genesis were probably a nice mix of the two schools as they managed to write "songs" rather than long drawn out excuses for musical wanking. Even the 26 minute "Supper's Ready" contained many little "songs" within itself. If you like Gabriel Genesis then PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) from Italy are worth checking out, especially their "Photos Of Ghosts" album. Curved Air, Caravan and the other "Canterbury" bands, there are tons of them, Gong are hit and miss but their stuff with Gilli Smythe in the band are worth hearing, as I say, it depends exactly what flavour of "Prog" you want.

This, neither here nor there but I consider pink floyd art rock. Not really prog rock in any way.
But that's just how I see it.

It's possible for bands I don't care for to have a song or two that I like. I can't really listen to much of Jethro Tull but I love Living in the Past as a song and have it in my phone's music folder.
The only full album I have in there is Dark Side of the Moon and that's also my entire Pink Floyd collection.

Well one band that just happens to be my favorite band ever would fit in that category: Hawkwind. Here's a little taste:

I've always heard the Space rock classification as well, but I've read a lot of things over the years that also lump them into the progressive rock category. I don't care how people classify them, I just love their music regardless. Space Ritual is definitely an outstanding live album, although because I'm such a huge Moorcock fan I lean towards Live Chronicles as my favorite live album ever.

Last time I saw them was the Chronicles of the Black Sword tour strangely enough in 1985. It was rather cringeworthy although Mike Moorcock joined them on stage to narrate some Elric bits and do "Sonic Attack". Saw them pretty much non stop in London from around 1975-'85 although the "Hawklords" period was my favourite even sharing a joint with Lemmy before one gig!. I recently read "Mother London" by Moorcock again for about the 5th time although the Colonel Pyat quartet is my favourite. Prefer his "serious" books to the sword and sorcery.

Since you're one of the few that I've come across that actually know Hawkwind well and like music from their best period, can you recommend any other rock type bands similar. I've checked out bands that are always suggested like Gong and Ozric Tentacles, but those bands just play songs like the weirder experimental Hawkwind tunes which are great for background music, but I want to find bands that actually have songs with smooth vocal melodies, no vocal distortions etc. Just straight up sci-fi rocking songs similar to Lord of Light, The Golden Void, Seven by Seven, Psy Power (80s live version), Master of the Universe etc. The closest I've come so far would be Monster Magnet. They are a bit harder overall than Hawkwind, but not over the top heavy. Any suggestions?

Difficult one as Hawkwind have such a unique sound, the whole "space rock" think covers bands that are much more instrumental to a large degree than Hawkwind were. Apart from the band's ex members stuff, the only real bands that were similar in "my" period were The Pink Fairies and to a lesser degree Gong. There are similarities with some of the Krautrock bands like "Neu!" (Neu! 75" is well worth a listen). If I think of any more I will post them, but they were pretty unique.

That's what I was afraid of. Every time I get a recommendation for a similar band, they are mostly instrumental or have distorted vocals that aren't really that great to me. I have heard of Pink Fairies before in association with Hawkwind, but haven't checked them out yet. So I'll give them and Neu a try. I'd recommend Monster Magnet to you as they are heavily influenced by Hawkwind and have even covered The Right Stuff and Ejection on a couple of their albums.

The Pink Fairies were more "rock" than Hawkwind but they both came from the "Ladbrooke Grove" London scene which was a minute version of Haight Ashbury where all the hippies lived in the late 60's. They shared free festivals and members and also there are bootlegs around of "Pinkwind" where they would gig with a group made up of members of both bands. The drummer Twink recently released another album and has been around forever. You also have The Deviants and The Social Deviants that spawned the Pink Fairies.
