Ha! They just did the folded space explanation for faster than light travel - almost word for word used again in Interstellar.

Hmmmm. It's okay, but not as good as the reviews.
The reviews say 'Alien levels of atmosphere'. That's nonsense, there is no atmosphere. They go through it far too quickly and don't build up atmosphere (film length is 95 minutes). That's a producer who wants to get 4 screenings per day in cinemas, not someone who wants to build atmosphere.
On the plus side, the premise is really good, the actors are fine, the sets are good.
But it misses the most interesting thing it says - "Let me take you to the universe of pain and suffering" and you think "yeah, let's see it!" but they don't go.
So all of the nastiness about the ship and where it went is never developed.
I would say 6.5.
It's okay, but don't expect anything special.

Doesn't really seem to fit what they were going for. It's been decades since I watched it. I seem to remember a totally unnecessary racial subtext, like tension between the rescue crew and Sam Neil because...IDK.

There definitely was tension, because the crew wanted to get the hell out but the ship was Sam Neill's baby and he wanted them all to stay. I din;t perceive any racial element. Found this: "Roger Ebert gave the film 2 stars out of 4, stating, "The script creates a sense of foreboding and afterboding, but no actual boding.""That's exactly it. Where's the universe of pain and nastiness?? They're talking about it a lot, but we never get there.
