Just started watching this show.
It was Chris Carter's last notable TV series which was intended to replace Millennium Carter's previous show cancelled after 3 seasons. However Harsh Realm turned out to be another disappointment for the Fox network and was taken off the air after only three of its nine episodes had aired.
Harsh Realm is a virtual reality game created by the U. S. Army, programmed to minutely replicate the real world for training simulations. When a renegade general played by Terry O'Quinn takes over the programme lieutenant Tom Hobbes (Scott Bairstowe) is unknowingly thrust into this world by his superiors with one mission: to kill "General" Omar Santiago.
The pilot looked pretty impressive with great production values (although being too expensive might've contributed to the show's downfall), and did a good job of setting up the show's world. I'm on the second episode now which has some typical "case of the week" issues. It's a much smaller story and therefore inevitably less exciting.
It feels a bit like Chris Carter's version of The Matrix, the protagonist is hailed by the inhabitants of Harsh Realm as the chosen one who was sent to free them from this world, but I fear the series didn't have enough time to be able to flesh out its mythology.
