And now he is saying what he needs to to strengthen his base.

Sad that people can't just stick to the truth. He could have said, "I do believe it's a sin. But as a politician, my personal view is irrelevant, I'm here to represent my constituents and they don't think it's a sin, so that is the view I will stand up for in parliament." He would have earned respect from that.
