I doubt it will happen, but ain't saying no at the idea of it. So many directions you could go.
They both end up being human and being rescued would be hilarious. The company that owned the research facility would obviously do an investigation. They would not accept simply losing all that money (and lives). Mac and Childs might actually be held hostage by the company; who could write the whole thing off as a giant explosion and fire. There would be remnants of the organism. Mac and Childs held in some dark room Count of Monte Cristo style for decades.
Of course, they could also both be human and simply die before being rescued. The rescue team trying to piece everything together.
One could have been a thing, the other human, and they fight to the death as soon as the cameras rolled. The thing hopping on board a chopper and getting back to society, full blown apocalypse scenario.
