A good late-90's movie from Jim Carrey and director Peter Weir that has an interesting premise (which was a prelude to the reality TV craze) and Carrey giving one of his earliest mature performances. The idea of a man's life being broadcasted 24/7 would not actually work in real life (huge cost to build an actual town with fully-functional buildings/sets/etc. even with sponsorships, no actor would commit for many years/decades to the show, people wouldn't really watch Truman do mundane tasks) but it works well enough in the movie for us to buy it. I don't think this is Carrey's finest dramatic work, but it still at least planted the seeds to show he could do more mature work. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: The Truman Show (1998) - 2.5 out of 4 stars"Truman Burbank lives a seemingly ideal existence in a tranquil seaside community. What he doesn't know is that his life is a giant 24-hour-a-day TV show, orchestrated by electronic mastermind/artist Harris in a completely controlled environment. Satire of our voyeuristic, consumer-driven society scores some points and offers Carrey a change of pace, but after the premise is established it doesn't know where to go. Perhaps that's because it's a short-story idea, not a feature film; The Twilight Zone used to do this kind of thing--better--in half-hour segments."

Is EDtv (1999) just a rip-off of The Truman Show (1998)?

Throw stones at me if you will but I do not find Jim Carrey funny at all. He has all the humor of a little kid in the backseat saying "Are we there yet?". But I thought he should have won the for The Truman Show. Fire Marshal Bill knocked it out of the park. I thought the movie was close to perfection. It's rare for me to root for a character but I was pulling for Truman Burbank at the end. And if I don't see you, Good afternoon, good evening and good night SPOILERS:
A lot of cool thing are all through the movie. The names of all the streets are actors, as is everyone in the "town". The sailboat Truman takes to escape is called "Santa Maria". One of Columbus's ship who also sailed off into the unknown toward the edge of the Earth.
