Floating Weeds (1959) dir: YasujirĂ´ Ozu Another story of revenge plotted by a member of a touring kabuki troupe, though less bloody. And another tale oft retold on film and TV, including by Ozu in 1934. I have seen both but the later version is better. The later version is on my watchlist on MAX, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I came very late to Ozu, and I love his works. He's a wonderful director.

Jean Renoir's Le carrosse d'or aka The Golden Coach 1952 was also about a travelling theatre company, this time in 18th-century Peru. Starring Anna Magnani. Am not familiar with this one, Teleadm, but I'm a huge fan of both Jean Renoir and Anna Magnani. Will see if I can find it. Thanks for the recommendation.

The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum (1939) by Kenji Mizoguchi Am not familiar with this, syllabub , but it sounds very interesting, and I will watch anything directed by Mizoguchi. Thanks for the introduction, and I'll see if I can find it.

I don't think that Stage Beauty (2004) has come up yet. Set around 1660 in London, the first woman actor ever steps forward to play Desdemona, replacing the young man who had made a career of the role. Based on a play.

Most of the ones that come to mind immediately are already mentioned
A Double Life (1947) A Chorus Line (1985) Shakespeare in Love (1998) The Dresser (1983)
Except for The Producers (1967), and its musical remade in 2005 (Edit: actually the musical remade was mentioned)

Rufus-TI've seen all your titles except for JESUS OF MONTREAL. It has been recommended to me many times over the years, but for some reason I've missed it. Will watch it, if I can find it. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for the reminder. I rated it highly, but it may not be for everyone. I think you will find it very interesting. Note that the movie is mostly in French
