Actors, directors, playwrights, et al, working in the live theatre realm - any and all categories of artistry and craftsmanship. The joys, the challenges, the rewards, etc. I'll start with a couple of my favorites, the first written and directed by the amazing Joseph Mankiewicz, about whom stage and film director Elia Kazan once said, "It's a tragedy that Mankiewicz isn't writing plays." All About Eve (1950) And another, which I personally feel the Bard himself would have enjoyed. Shakespeare in Love (1998)

The show doesn’t even make it to opening night during the movie but the rigor and heartbreak of tryouts and rehearsals for a Broadway musical are convincingly depicted in ALL THAT JAZZ.

Me and Orson Welles (2008) Christian McKay TOTALLY channeled Orson Welles in this. Very good film.

42nd Street (1933) Using “The Broadway Melody” (1929) and especially “42nd Street” as models, the 1930s and 1940s were thick with movies about staging musicals.

The Country Girl
Kelly de-glams (and wins an Oscar), Crosby bares his soul and Holden demonstrates why he should have been cast as Bill Sampson in All About Eve. BarrymoreViewers may very well come away from this 2011 production seriously considering the possibility that Christopher Plummer was the greatest actor of his time.

A lot of Hollywood musical plots are backstage stories. Gypsy (1963) The Seven Little Foys. (1955) The Bandwagon (1953)
