One of the great composers who also happened to write some of the best music for movies too, nearly exclusively at Warner Brothers. Since this year we celebrate his birth 126th years ago in what was once Brünn in Austrian-Hungary Empire, now Brno in Czech Republic. The more I read and collected facts I understood that this subject was too big for me to handle and yet I wanted us to remember the great music he wrote for the movies. Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957)
Most of his music can be found on YT or other music sights in either convoluted form, or in concert forms (15 to 20 minutes) or the whole soundtracks. He orchestrated one more movie, not for the lack of money, but to stop modern interpreters, in forgettable Wagner biopic Magic Fire 1955, and doing a rare cameo with a batoon. His most famous work, "Die Tote Stadt", is still regarded as one of the major operas of the 20th century. First published in 1997, there are other biographies too. Thanks for watching! Opinions of all kinds are welcome!

Thanks for the wonderful post, Teleadm. Korngold was one of the giants, for sure. His work will live long in the history of film music and music composition in general. I'm going to be watching one of my favorites of the films he scored, King's Row, again soon, and I will pay special attention to his music in my viewing of it, in honor of his birth 125 years ago. I wish he hadn't left us so soon. His talent was immense.

This short footage is by far the only known visual recording that shows composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold at the piano. It was recorded for the promo trailer for the 1934 Max Reinhardt movie "A Midsummernight's Dream". The short film "A Dream Comes True" presented in almost 8 minutes the all star cast and (world!) famous people of that time who worked behind the cameras, like Korngold. The famous composer was asked to arrange the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy music of A Midsummer Night's Dream, based on the play by William Shakespeare for the movie. This clip also shows him, playing in his intimate, original and orchestral way...way to short!
"Promotional film about the making of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM - the Max Reinhardt film from 1935. This little film includes the only known footage of Erich Wolfgang Korngold playing the piano. It also manages to avoid showing any scenes with Shakespearean dialogue - Warner Brothers Studio was terrified it would put people off from seeing the film. Unique scenes of Reinhardt rehearsing and film of the Hollywood premiere on October 16 1935 complete this fascinating glimpse of movie history. "
