Barbara Windsor said Benny Hill was a comic genius. Hal Roach said he would have made a great silent movie comic. When the veteran Hal Roach was asked during a campus lecture if any modern comic measured up to the greats of the past, he replied “I guess there’s only one Benny Hill”.

Brits seem to be born able to successfully play Shakespeare without any training or previous experience, even primarily comedy actors. Witness John Cleese as Petruchio in “The Taming Of The Shrew” (1980) and Leonard Rossiter as the title character in “King John” (1984).
I saw a professional company’s performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” just five days ago, so I have Nick Bottom, the Weaver, in the front of my mind and believe that Benny Hill would have been a Shakespeare acting legend if he had ever taken on the role – or that of Dogberry, Touchstone, Falstaff, or Lear’s Fool.
