“There are 200 countries in the world. Do these people honestly think that god is sitting around picking his favorites? Why would he do that? Wy would god have a favorite country and why would it be America out of all the counties? Because we have the most money? Because he likes our national anthem? Maybe because he heard that we have 18 delicious flavors of classic Rice Aroni.
“It’s delusional thinking. It’s delusional thinking and Americans are not alone with these sort of delusions. Military cemeteries around the world are packed with brainwashed dead soldiers who were convinced god was on their side. America prays for god to destroy our enemies. Our enemies pray for god to destroy us. Someone’s gonna be disappointed. Someone’s wasting their time. Could it be…everyone?”

Yes, they do
"Why would he do that?"
Because there are a lot of dumb people
"Wy would god have a favorite country and why would it be America out of all the counties?"
Because America has a lot of dumb people

Yahweh was originally just the tribal god of Israel, and one of the major themes of the OT is God's favoritism with respect to one relatively small group of people.

...18 delicious flavors of classic Rice Aroni. God doesn't care about Rice-A-Roni. This is why God favors the US.

It took me sec to figure out what “hones” meant.
Part of this American belief in God’s new covenant with the USA is because of our freedom of religion, believe it or not.
The Great Awakening in Brit-Anglo spirituality coincided with the Puritans establishment in New England as their movement was clamped down on after the Stuarts got the throne back. However, this spiritual awakening, not truncated in Britain, continued on in the colonies.
Anyway, one the Puritan refugees, John Winthrop, preached a famous sermon called “A Model of Christian Charity” that most American students were required to read. He explains how America is being created by God to be model for a new Christendom and people like the Puritans were being called by God to do this work.
We shall find that the God of Israel is among us, when ten of us shall be able to resist a thousand of our enemies; when He shall make us a praise and glory that men shall say of succeeding plantations, "may the Lord make it like that of New England." For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.
From wikipedia
Impact
“A Model of Christian Charity” conveys the optimistic, confident, community-focused mindset in which the New England colonies were founded. Perry Miller, a historian considered one of the founders of American Studies, wrote that the sermon “stands at the beginning of [the] consciousness” of the American mind.[7]
Several figures in U.S. politics – beginning as early as John Adams[8] – have referenced this text in public speeches when trying to convey themes of unity and idealism, most often citing the symbol of “a city upon a hill.”
In his 1980 Election Eve speech, Ronald Reagan asserted his belief that “Americans…are every bit as committed to that vision of a shining city on a hill, as were those long ago settlers.”[9]
More recently, public figures have utilized the sermon to argue how far the United States has strayed from its values. In his critique of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney posited that “[Trump’s] personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city on a hill.”[10]

It took me sec to figure out what “hones” meant. I was going to title this thread "George Carlin" whose quote this is, but somehow part of the first sentence got up there instead. I didn't notice it for a couple of days so left it because people were already reading it and responding. I didn't want to confuse things. And I agree that religious piety is a major reason. One of the current permutations of that is that the Constitution itself is based on the Bible (presumably including the Hebrew Scriptures) and fundamental Christianity. Psudo-historians like David Barton continue to push this over years even thought his words are so easily debunked. The religious ignorant continue to eat it up.

It quite possibly is. Guys like Barton are not smart nor clever enough to dream stuff like this up on his own.
