Hm, ... nearly (or no?) movies from the European continent? >> bad!
There do exist a ton of French, Czech and Danish very good movies.
Despite all Nostalgia: I question a lot of stuff here!
Yellow Submarine is not good for 0-5 - has to many sad parts (later on: very good)
James and the Giant Peach is not good for 0-5 I think, (later on: very good)
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is too much an attack on all senses for my tastes
For 5-8 old
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - ehm too nostalgic, I guess too boring for children of today
I prefer the old Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory of that time
For 8-12
The Sound of Music
Uh, please, this really is too dated for today's children
Spirited Away
I'd propose this more for 12-14 (and onwards)
In case there is someone interested in good movies for children, I could give some examples here

I don't get the fascination with Coraline.

Example of what I consider to be a good movie for 5-10 (and very watchable for their parents, too) this Noah Arch version Raining Cats and Frogsen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raining_Cats_and_Frogs(sadly couldn't find english dub :( )

A French production The Fox and the Childen.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fox_and_the_Child(Attention, there are a ton of similar titles that are other movies) would be suitable for 6 upwards, but it has some scary scenes when the girl is lost by night in the forest. I think from 8 upwards possible. The movie is less kitschy as the trailer looks and has brillant photography. It does educate children - to pay attention to what nature has to offer - about the fact that You see the more the calmer You are - and trying to tame a wild animal as a pet so You can keep it at home is a bad idea Good home cinema is rewarding with this movie!

A movie that catches the spirit of the famous book for children
Absolutely fantastic - You can even watch this without any children nearby - it's still a fine watch
