She is mostly famous for two dimensionally different roles, as Doll Conovan in The Asphalt Jungle 1950 and as squeaky silent movie star Line Lamont in Singin' in the Rain 1952. And that ought to show some versatility but Hollywood never catched on.
While as a youngster and studying at Northwestern University, her roommate was Patricia Neal, who interested her to start acting, first at radio and later on Broadway, and eventually in movies.
This year we celebrate her 100th birth date in Chicago.

Movie debut as a femme fatale in comedy Adam's Rib 1949 starring Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn.
No matter what, she sticks with Dix (Sterling Hayden) in The Asphalt Jungle 1950.
The wrong voice, Lina Lamont in Singin' in the Rain 1952. A role she was Oscar nominated for.
By 1953 she joined the cast of Make Rome for Daddy TV-series until 1956 starring Danny Thomas. she was nominated three times for an Emmy Award.
Co-starring in noir The Big Knife 1955, directed by Robert Aldrich, also starring Jack Palance and Shelley Winters.
Although she made frequent guest appearances in television series, she was unable to resume her film career in starring roles. Her health began to decline due to an alcohol problem and she spent many years hospitalized or under medical care in the 1960's.
As Fred MacMurray's wife in Disney hit movie The Shaggy Dog 1959 was a later bright spot.
As Ray Milland's wife in AIP thriller Panic in Year Zero 1962
Last cinema role came in Bette Davis vehicle Dead Ringer 1964.
In the mid-1970's she started acting in a few TV-series episodes like Starsky and Hutch and The Streets of San Francisco, both 1976. Her last role was a year later in TV-Movie Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn 1977.
She has a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to television.
