'The Feud That Still Reverberates' 'Ladder Match' : Alberto Del Rio Vs Christian @ Extreme Rules 2011
[9.0] "What an amazing ladder match. First of all this was very emotional. Edge had just retired and Christian was going for his first (WWE) World Heavyweight Championship. These 2 put on a great match, and Christian winning is one of the greatest moments in WWE history. ****1/4."
- Nasty Yaffa, Cagematch
[9.0] "This was an awesome match. This is probably one of the best Ladder match in history, the action is fantastic and the storytelling is great. They really put their bodies on the line in the stiffest way possible, they took some hard bumps and made some great spots. This match was big spot after big spot and I can't even say which one I liked so much I liked everything about it. Del Rio was a brilliant heel and surely had one of the best performances of his career here, doing a vicious job on Christian's arm. Christian was a perfect babyface, touching the hearts of the fans and having the crowd in the palm of his hand. You could clearly feel his ladder experience here and it's always good to remember that he's an awesome performer, this kind of performance proves it. Underdog stories are always beautiful when they're well told, and here it was, probably one of the most beautiful title wins of the last decade. Look at Christian's reaction when he won the title, look at Edge's reaction, look at that crowd's reaction, this was crazy and it was so deserved for Christian. Maybe there was a little bit of unnecessary overbooking at the end of the match but that doesn't spoil the quality of this superb bout between Del Rio and Christian. Edge coming to congratulate Christian was a fantastic touch. Amazing stuff."
- The Legit Boss, Cagematch
[10.0] "This was really great. I liked how they didn't use the ladder as a weapon a whole lot early on. They focused on beating each other down with wrestling moves early on. Del Rio looked really good and in control for a lot of it. He worked very well and looked apt for a ladder match despite only being in one previously before this match. Christian also looked well showing his experience in ladder matches. I liked the way Del Rio worked over Christian's arm as well as using the ladder while doing it like when he used the step ladder to hit an arm breaker, slamming his arm into the ladder, and applying an armbreaker with the ladder on Christian for examples. Christian did well to sell his arm for example when he hit the Spear. I liked how Christian was quick to get to the top of the ladder after Del Rio missed the elbow drop to the outside. The ending was good with Edge coming out to distract Del Rio and Christian knocking him off the ladder allowing him to win the World title. A well deserved win."
- Owen C 510, Cagematch
'At Extreme Rules, Christian fulfilled a lifelong dream, triumphing over Alberto Del Rio in a brutal Ladder Match to capture his first World Heavyweight Championship, with the help of his best friend Edge. (Match photos) In few WWE matches are the stakes as elevated as the infamous Ladder Match. After the competing Superstars undoubtedly sacrifice their bodies and take years off their careers, only one of them will climb high above the ring and gain possession of the hanging championship title. From the opening bell, both Superstars fought tooth and nail, enduring unspeakable steel-infused torment for the right to carve their place in history and determine the future of the vacant World Title. Though Christian walked into the ring an established master of the rungs of destiny, his opponent made up for his lack of experience with pure ruthless determination.'

Was saddened to see the Great Adrian Street passed away recently. Here he is with his dad, a picture that Luke Haines loved and used.

Oh yes, a legend as shown by all the tributes that have been pouring in across the world of wrestling. Jim Cornette just released a video tribute yesterday online.

Wrestling is a brotherhood and a sisterhood. Mickey Rourke said when he began research for Darren Aronofsky's 'The Wrestler' (2008) he thought it was all a bit of a joke, boys playing. This all changed when he was taken in by the wrestling community who are friends of his to this day. He saw how brutal life on the road is, hardly a day off between training and performing, and he said these guys are as tough as they come (and Rourke has spent time researching in American and Russian prisons).
Wrestling entertainment has had a strong foothold in Ireland, Scotland and Wales for many decades. In England, it was popular in the midlands and the north for many years, though London did produce the likes of Mick McManus and Jackie Pallo. Superstar Big Daddy Crabtree was a Yorkshireman and his rival Giant Haystacks was born in London but raised in Lancashire from when he was a toddler. Today's in-ring Yorkshire hero is Big Ridge Holland of the Brawling Brutes. Lancashire wrestling is said to be primarily in the "catch-as-you-can" wrestling style that became popular in the late 19th century. There's also elements of Irish "collar-and-elbow" wrestling in the mix (there's a large anglo-Irish population). Lord William Regal was born in Staffordshire but raised in Lancashire. Billy Robinson, Marty Jones, 'British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith, 'Dynamite Kid' Thomas Billington, Mark 'Rollerball' Rocco, Wade 'Bad News' Barrett and 'Gentleman' Jack Gallagher are just some of the big names to emerge from Lancashire. Robbie Brookside became the King Of Liverpool and now his daughter Xia Brookside is a top rank talent. You can watch PCW UK Wrestling on SKY TV, independent shows held in Preston. When Impact Wrestling helped relaunch World Of Sport Wrestling a few years back it fittingly began at Preston Guild Hall, several months on from the staging of a one-off special filmed in Salford. PCW also perform at Blackpool Tower.

People often ask me, what was it that made this particular title match a classic in some peoples' eyes? First, it's important to remember why this was the era of the "essence of excellence" dominated by "Mexico's greatest export" Alberto Del Rio. He's a supremely gifted technical wrestler with a top 100 moves to rival anyone, part of a storied Mexican wrestling dynasty with wrestling in his blood. He can high fly or grapple, has the supreme skills of a luchador though he abandoned his mask early, has incredible speed, skill and accuracy. But he's also big, and that's what still sets him apart to this day from most luchadors. American masters like Eddie Guerrero and Rey Rey Mysterio were on the shorter side by wrestling standards but with huge upper body strength, whereas Del Rio arrived big and strong and couldn't be outmuscled in the ring. He had all the tools and used them.

So this was Christian Cage's moment when he stepped out of the shadow of Edge in WWE. He'd make the courageous move to pioneer new indies soon enough as Vince McMahon is said to have famously expressed the view that Edge had a far bigger and better size and body and that he never cared for Christian's face. But make no mistake, the history of tables, ladders and chairs is forever indebted to the work across many years of three of the greatest tag teams in wrestling history - Edge & Christian, the Hardys and the Dudley Boys.
Edge is rightly celebrated for spearing Jeff Hardy | Vince McMahon's media machine pushed the narrative Christian was best at landing hard on his own balls
..
Everything worked with this rivalry due to the writing, the performing and the wrestling matches. It helped secure the legacies of two of the best technical wrestlers in the business and that's what it's all about.

Oh, I'm sure it's a tough life part from a few at the pinnacle. Just because it's all staged doesn't take away from it's dangers and toughness. Just isn't a "sport" and should never be considered one.

Always been old ladies and kids who like it over here.
So, wrestling fandom apparently accounts for 2 or 3 of the most popular messageboard systems currently activated on ProBoards, by what I've read. I mean, it's popular. But I don't know a single hardcore wrestling fan who calls it a sport in the era of "sports entertainment". For sure, it's absolutely not a sport. So, why screen it for old ladies and children on packages designed by World Of Sport, SKY Sports, BT Sports etc. etc. ??
TNT Joint Champion Christian Cage lays down the law
My favourite living author, John Irving, has written extensivley about the ancient sport / art of wrestling. The sport itself is pure, technical theatre to spectators but in the best sense. There are many different styles and forms of wrestling. Technical wrestlers often see and hear their real life credentials being mentioned on commentary during wrestling shows, be it amateur records, qualifications or beyond, so they understand some people take this aspect of their performance seriously. Some wrestlers today are also MMA / UFC fighters, just as historically, sports entertainment has attracted boxers for example. Today's top dog Roman Reigns played professional football in the National Football League, as did his recent heavyweight rival Bill Goldberg. I mentioned new English superstar hero Big Ridge 'The Fridge' Holland, he played real rugby for years. Those select sports fans that only ever sneer and deride whenever wrestling gets mentioned, lest we remember, also spend their days watching repeats of Noel Edmonds' 'House Party', Jim Davidson's 'Big Break' and Jason Manford's 'Bigheads' on da UK Golden.

So, the moment has come in Toledo, Ohio (mistaken for Dayton by several wrestlers), and the moment has gone ... within the veteran men's wrestling class (40s - 50s), is Bryan Danielson ('American Dragon'), or reigning TNT Champion Christian Cage ('Captain Charisma'), the greatest north American technical wrestler of a generation?
Two great technical wrestlers, for sure, yet was it ever in doubt ...

It was 13 years in the making, as Adam Copeland earned himself an opportunity in All Elite Wrestling to claim a championship belt from the brother that so generously took him in, reigning TNT Champion Christian Cage.
