While making an appearance on This Past Weekend with Theo Von, Devine talked about the quality of comedies in Hollywood. The Righteous Gemstones star said that although TV comedies are still good, he can’t say the same about movie comedies. “My theory is I think, I think like Marvel ruined it,” Devine said. “I feel like superhero movies kind of ruined comedies. Because people go to the theater and you expect to watch something that costs $200 million to make and comedy movies aren’t that.” The Pitch Perfect alum noted that moviegoers are stuck in a predicament about where to spend their money opting for a bigger budget production where you get more bang for your buck. “So you’re like, ‘Well, why would I spend the same amount of money to go watch a little comedy in a theater, if I could spend the same amount of money and go see something that is, is worth $200 million?” Devine added. Devine mentioned that Marvel movies contain comedy citing the talking raccoon on Guardians of the Galaxy. The actor also noted the output of comedies from the studios being on a steep decline in recent years. deadline.com/2023/08/adam-devine-marvel-theory-superhero-movies-ruined-comedies-1235457090/

Seth Rogen ruined comedies all by himself without Marvel.

He's not wrong, but what are you gonna do? Everything is cyclical. Comedies will come back when the time is right and when the next Jim Carey or Will Ferrell hits the scene. Someone young people will go to the theater to see.

Yeah, I had to snicker a little bit at his comments since I saw that one and it sucked.

I mean, it's not like comedies have been known to compete against blockbusters in the theater. Comedies usually get obliterated by blockbusters in the theater unless the blockbuster is actually crap, and this trend predates Marvel. The only thing Marvel did that was new was that they released multiple blockbusters per year AND made sure that majority of these blockbusters were actually good.

He's asking if you have the choice between a 200 million dollar movie and a comedy, why spend the same amount of money for a ticket on the cheaper movie.
Maybe you had to be there, but his argument is kind of embarrassing. That or maybe he's just not presenting it well.
