To be fair, demos at the time were the conservative side of the party. They and Repubs switched because of Civil Rights. Also interesting how the idea behind zombies changed. Now it has to do with the victim being host of a virus that changes them into walking brain dead.

I can remember when comedians made jokes about things other than politics.
But I'm pretty old, too.

Some claim that 'switch' happened anywhere between 1860 and 1920
Doesn't really make a difference as it's really only one party, the Establishment.

It’s amazing that nobody really new if Johnny Carson voted Democrat or Republican. My guess is he voted Republican because he was friends with many from “Old Hollywood”, which were mostly Republican by the 1970s.

Shame on you for not including Dick Gregory. One of the few who actually put his life on the line by walking the talk for Civil Rights with MLK Jr. All these WHITE comedians are comfortable hiding out on the stage unlike Dick who actually put himself out there.

I think of it as The Corporate Party myself.

My guess is he voted Republican because he was friends with many from “Old Hollywood”, which were mostly Republican by the 1970s. I like how both sides were fair game and he skewered both. I think he leaned left or was a conservative Dem. According to Wikipedia, “Carson opposed the Vietnam War and capital punishment, favored racial equality, and was against criminalizing extramarital sex and pornography. He avoided explicitly mentioning his views on The Tonight Show, saying he “hates to be pinned down” as that would “hurt me as an entertainer, which is what I am.” As he explained in 1970, “In my living room I would argue for liberalization of abortion laws, divorce laws, and there are times when I would like to express a view on the air. I would love to have taken on Billy Graham. But I’m on TV five nights a week; I have nothing to gain by it and everything to lose.” He also seldom invited political figures onto the Tonight Show because he “didn’t want it to become a political forum” and did not want the show used, by himself or others, to influence the opinions of the viewers. www.thefencepost.com/news/talk-show-hosts-could-learn-from-johnny-carson/

I can remember when comedians made jokes about things other than politics. But I'm pretty old, too. Marlon Wayons recently spoke out about cancel culture and concerns about it leading to the loss of freedom of speech. Given that In living Color back in the 90's was about the most un-PC show, ever (and one of the funniest), it's no surprise. He thinks comedians should lead the way in the fight for free speech. www.foxnews.com/media/comedian-marlon-wayans-slams-cancel-culture-getting-backlash-try-small-town-jokeIf you watch old shows like In Living Color, or clips of of Johnny Carson, it's a different world. Carson was hilarious, and his political comedy wasn't comedy activism or mean spirited, it was just funny.

Comedy and politics have been like chocolate and peanut butter since before Aristophanes.
