He is right, of course. The NBA champions are certainly the BEST team in the world, but they are not World Champions. The two are not the same thing.

I'd be willing to bet that the Denver Nuggets would beat every pro or amateur basketball team in the world. It helps that nearly all the great players from the other countries play in the NBA.
The point is moot.

The point is moot. But they only play in the NBA. They're not playing other countries. Winning a domestic league doesn't make you world champions. For eg all the best players in the world play in the EPL. They call themselves EPL champions, and not world champions.

There are multiple leagues of a similar standard to the EPL just in Europe alone (Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 etc). The best players in the world play in those European leagues as well as in leagues all over the planet (there are hundreds of leagues). The NBA has no equal in terms of organized basketball. Plus, the "NBA Champions" are easily the best in the world regardless of whether or not they're called World Champions so this entire thread is pointless.

I know there are other football leagues in Europe and elsewhere. None of them call themselves world champions. This is more about geography than anything else. NBA is played in USA and has one team in Canada. That's not the world. The point of this thread is the label of "world champions" doesn't apply to NBA champions. It's sounds so silly. This is typical American arrogance. America is not the world.

Whoever wins the AFL in Australia this year would destroy any other AFL team in the world. There are players from Ireland, USA, several African nations and the Pacific Islands running around and yet the winner of that league will be the AFL Premiers. There were some pundits who tried to use "world record" for AFL records because "it's what the Americans do." The general consensus was "Americans sound like assholes when they do it, so please stop." It stopped very quickly.

That is unquestionably a competition involving the best teams in the world and yet the winner never refers to themselves as World Champions. They're the European Champions.

It still doesn't make them world champions. Again, the question is about geography and the only country the NBA league plays is Canada. That's not the world. NBA champions are not world champions. They're not competing against other countries. I don't know what's so hard to understand here. It's simple logic.

To be world champions in football you have to win the world cup which starts with around 200 countries competing. That's a "world" competition.

Name an American football team from elsewhere in the world that would stand a chance at beating the Super Bowl winners. You can't. The point, that you're continuously missing, is that it doesn't matter whether or not these teams are called World Champions - they're the best in the world regardless.

How many countries even play American football? Lol. And the point that you're contiously missing is that it's geography. The label of world champion can't apply to you when you're the only country that's competing.

If I invent a game for my family and friends only and am best, I am World Champion then? Silly argument. For the "world" aspect to apply then it needs to be a sport that is played at an international level in a fairly large number of countries one would think, otherwise the title is utterly meaningless and nothing but arrogance based. ....Yggdrasil...World Champion table tennis ball flipper off buttocks.
