Same can be said for the winner of the Super Bowl. The only real world champions is the winner of the World Cup. Funny how those winners are not so arrogant even though they have the real bragging rights over our football teams. It doesn't stop there. They also have "World Series" for baseball. But it may have been unofficially called that at times as far back as 1884. Japan, the next country to take up professional baseball seriously, didn’t start that until after World War Two. So… American arrogance in this case? Not so much. |

No one plays the NBA brand of basketball around the world. Germany playing Denver with NBA rules would be much different than playing with international rules. NFL is different from Canadian football or college football or XFL. Exactly right. The World Cup is unique because the rules are the same for soccer football teams around the world. This makes it possible to organize teams this way. You can pull from all of these different leagues around the world. It’s still organized in national team competition though. But they have this international world championship apart from the Olympics. And it’s probably the only team sport where this happens. Another thing that Noah Lyles comments don’t take into consideration is that it’s much easier to organize and compete a world champion in individual sports than it is in team sports. |
