He's only carrying on like that because he knows he'll be found Guilty, leaving his only chance at not receiving the death penalty is to make himself seem mentally deficient and play on the sympathy of some gullible jury member when it comes to sentencing.

Bribery in other countries can take on some strange forms. Such as a person being approached and commissioned to do a crime that is basically a suicide mission on the promise that their friends and or family will be paid well or looked after for the rest of their lives on completion of the job resulting in the death of the person commissioned to do it.
Such a thing may seem unthinkable to westerners with western values, however, it should be noted that people who live in extremely impoverished countries may have a completely different set of values in that they might value the lives of their loved ones much more than they value their own lives.
Something to think about and consider... In that extreme poverty of the masses is not a good thing for the wealthy few.
