Oh man, one of my favorite things on IMDB was the annual flocking to the Halloween boards. AMC runs a Halloween marathon every year. I think they still do (I don't have cable)? Like clockwork, people would flock to various boards from the franchise. 4 and 5 seemed to be the popular ones for some reason. We'd gather and talk about which moments and movies were our favorites, make fun of the bad stuff (Tina was always a target), and agree to meet again when Halloween was over.
One thing I've always liked about the franchise is their willingness to completely ignore a movie and throw it out the window if it sucked, LOL. Even though I hated Kills and Ends, I liked 2018 and thought it was smart to ignore the crap (though 2 probably could have been included). Because of that, there's lots of head canon and timelines. What are yours? I have a few:
1, 2, and H20. H20 is very 90s, but still one of the better sequels. This was the best timeline until 2018 came along.
1, 2, and 4. 5 and 6 are just so bad. I have no interested in them whatsoever. The "Thorn" shit just never resonated with me. I never used to like 4, but it's actually grown on me over the years and works fairly well as a sequel to the first two. I love the opening of 4 with Michael in a coma being transferred and finally emerges from his slumber.
1 & 2018. Work extremely well as a pair. 2018 is one of my favorites. It had the perfect ending, it's a shame they kept at it (and the next two were so bad).

I think 1 is the only one that is an actually good movie, but I’ve seen all of them (except the Rob Zombie duo).
My controversial opinions, judging from the Halloween subreddit, are that I don’t much like 2, 3, or H20; hate 2018; and kinda like Kills.
I also like 4 and think Ends has a decent premise but horrid execution, though those opinions don’t seem to be as controversial.
Oh! And I forgot my most controversial Halloween opinion: I like Resurrection. I really do. It’s more a comedy than anything else, but I find it consistently entertaining (Busta Rhymes!), which is more than I can say for 5 or 6 or even (Dan O’Herlihy aside) 3.
My ranking would probably be this:
1. Halloween (1978) 2. Halloween 4 3. Halloween: Resurrection 4. Halloween Kills 5. Halloween II 6. Halloween III: Season of the Witch 7. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later 8. Halloween Ends 9. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers 10. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers 11. Halloween (2018)
Something I will say is that even at the series’s worst, I find every Halloween more interesting and more entertaining than all the Friday the 13ths I’ve seen except for Freddy vs. Jason and the Universal Monster pastiche Jason Lives.

Technically this franchise is a big steaming mess, but it's my personal favourite horror franchise, or at least one of them. The way they basically give different paths for people to choose their own timeline is pretty fun. There are some genuinely great entries and the original is my favourite horror film with Michael Myers being my favourite of the slasher icons.
I'll order the movies in tiers:
S - 1
A - H20, 4, 2
B - 2018, Kills, 6
C - Ends, 3, RZ movies
D - 5, Resurrection

Halloween (2018) Something I will say is that even at its worst, I find the Halloween series more interesting and more entertaining than all the Friday the 13ths I’ve seen except for Freddy vs. Jason and the Universal Monster pastiche Jason Lives. Oh wow. Yeah, there's some very questionable takes in there. There's just no way in hell 2018 is worse than Kills, 5, 6, and Resurrection; which is an awful movie. I mean, I like some bad movies too, but 3rd highest?
Ends was such a strange movie. I agree, there was some stuff there. Michael is (finally) dying just as a new evil emerges? Not a bad idea. But then they killed the potential replacement (Corey) making that idea pointless. He could have taken the series into the future. Not Michael, but still something just evil lives on. They should have introduced Corey in the first one then and have him slowly descend into madness somewhere around the middle-to-end of Kills. Give Mike one last run and give the franchise a future.
I also liked Michael in the sewers. I have literally had that conversation on IMDB over the years. Living in the seweres, caves, abandoned factories. Sleeping, growing stronger, eating rats occasionally.
It also did not make any sense whatsoever to have Laurie's granddaughter like Corey.
Oh I definitely prefer Halloween to Friday the 13th. Those movies do nothing for me. Freddy vs Jason is stupid fun, I can agree with that. I do like the Freddy movies though. They are different with the dream stuff. I like that aspect and the mythology. A New Nightmare is excellent, actually.

Freddy is deader than dead and Jason's last movie was over a decade ago. He's easily the the most popular of the 3. You're not alone in him being your favorite.

Both of those have remained mostly consistent in continuity and Elm Street is probably better in overall quality. It is mostly the studios of those other franchises that didn't know what the hell to do with them, plus Jason was caught up in a lawsuit battle. If they ever do revive either of the two, I'm thinking they'll play it safe and do what the new Halloween trilogy did.

Yep, agreed about Ends’s pluses and minuses—and how it shoots itself in the foot by killing Corey. I like the first two Nightmares (though the first isn’t as scary as its premise, in my opinion) and a lot about New Nightmare (especially the performances—Heather Langenkamp is so beautiful and so charming in it). If I’m not completely sold on New Nightmare, that’s only because I think some of the pacing is a bit off and it sometimes tries to do too much. But much of it is excellent. Yes, I like Resurrection while admitting that it is a bad movie. I saw a chunk of it the other day and still found it more entertaining than H20, which I find unatmospheric, weakly plotted, and visually flat after the opening sequence. And, while I know a lot of people like 2018, yeah, I’m not a fan, to say the least.

They've ignored movies they don't like (or bombed) and it's still the only one of those franchises still alive.
I read not too long ago it might finally be happening with Jason: collider.com/friday-the-13th-reboot-sean-s-cunningham/. I would be fine with a flat out remake or sequel that ignores most of the series. I only saw it once, but I don't remember the 09 movie being so bad. Certainly better than a lot of Friday sequels.
I don't see people ever accepting a Freddy remake. Already failed once. People just don't wanna see anyone besides Englund.
I don't think their continuity is as clean as you think. New Nightmare is totally it's own thing. It's not a part of the main timeline all though I do admit it wasn't negating anything before it. There's debate whether Freddy vs Jason and Jason X are too.

And, while I know a lot of people like 2018, yeah, I’m not a fan, to say the least. I had a lot of problems with the movie, some of them with Corey, but yes. Don't tease an heir to the evil empire and then kill him. Halloween 5 kinda did the same thing with Jamie Michael, but the idea was dismissed in 5. That said, I don't know if people were ready for it in the 90s. But 40+ years after Michael's first appearance? As much as I hated Ends, it did the whole Michael is dying thing pretty well. The town could have thought they were safe, but Corey was slowly emerging int he background and would survive the movie without anyone knowing he replaced Michael.
I haven't watched and Freddy movie in ages - aside from New Nightmare about 4 years ago - but always enjoyed how they expanded the mythology. They became parodies, but were amusing.

I'm sure there will be an audience if a new Freddy or Jason film will come out. I wouldn't mind a reboot for Friday the 13th and casual viewers wouldn't mind that but it needs to have Jason to start out but I wouldn't mind some changes down the line. But yeah, it will be tougher for Nightmare without Robert Englund. I didn't say their continuity is squeaky clean, I said mostly.

I am a very big fan of the original Halloween; I saw it in the theater as a kid. I've only seen 1, 2, and 3, I think. If 3 is the one in the hospital. Also, that hillbilly version by Rob Zombie. Haven't seen any of the new ones. Should I? Maybe that's the thing for this October.

Sometimes you have to take a movie for what it is, and not what one wanted it to be. I didn't like Sleepy Hollow the first viewing because it wasn't what I expected but it's a really good movie if you take it for what it is.
