A familiar supporting actor who a few times played leading characters. Though most of his acting career was on television he occasionally acted in movies too.
He was born 100 years ago (as of 2023), his father was an architect, and he was the great-grandson of the United States secretary of the treasury of the same name, whom he is said to have resembled.
During WW II he became a paratrooper with Company B, 1st Battalion 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. While stationed in Frankfurt during the Allied occupation of Germany, he enrolled in Biarritz American University in France and became involved in theater and acting.
William Windom (1923-2012)
One of his first acting roles was a Tybalt in a televised version of Romeo and Juliet 1949 on The Philco Television Playhouse, most of the 1950's and early 1960's was spent on television in both famous and forgotten shows.
As "Old Man Tyler" who turns out to be not that old in Lucy Show episode Lucy Digs Up a Date 1962.
Movie debut in To Kill a Mockingbird 1962.
Other movies followed like Cattle King and For Love or Money 1963 and The Americanization of Emily 1964.
First lead role as Congressman Glen Morley on TV series The Farmer's Daughter 1963 to 1966.
As Commodore Decker in Star Trek episode The Doomsday Machine 1967, a role he would return to in the short lived Star Trek Phase II series in an episode in 2004.
Playing against type in The Detective 1968 as a homophobic killer.
In what would later be known as the Columbo pilot, Prescription: Murder 1968.
Based on the writings of James Thurber, My World and Welcome to It only lasted for 26 episodes 1969 - 1970, but he won an Emmy Award for it. His only award or nomination during his long career.
As POTUS in Escape from the Planet of the Apes 1971.
In Disney comedy Now You See Him, Now You Don't 1972
After acting in mostly every TV-series of the 1970's and 1980's he had a recurring role in Murder She Wrote as Dr Hazlit between 1986 and 1996, becoming the actor who played in most episodes, except Angela Lansbury ofcourse. He had played another character in an earlier 1985 episode.
He acted or voice-acted in over 255 television and movie productions between 1949 and 2006. So the above examples is not complete, just samples.
He was married five times!
