I don't watch a lot of TV, anymore - no cable - so I don't see a tremendous number of weathercasts, but here lately every time I check weather on the internet, places like The Weather Channel.com are talking about Winter Storm Jaxon or Winter Storm Rahib or Winter Storm Deshondra.
Back in my day, there were tropical storms, hurricanes and typhoons with names, and that's it. Yeah, it's going to snow tomorrow - it doesn't need a name. Get a job and get off my lawn, you pansies! Just because the snow on your windshield came from Winter Storm Jumbax doesn't give meaning to your life as you scrape it off.
And stop with the stupid names. Decima, Caly...ugh.
What gives? Can we put these up to a vote, ala Boaty McBoatface?

Don't know about where you are, but the Met Office started naming them here only in 2015. They have to be pretty fierce as well to warrant a name.
These are our names for 2017/18:
Aileen (assigned) Brian (assigned) Caroline (assigned) Dylan (assigned) Eleanor (assigned) Fionn (F-yunn) Georgina Hector Iona James Karen Larry Maeve Niall (Nye-al) Octavia Paul Rebecca Simon Tali Victor Winifred
I am outraged by the lack of diversity!

My guess is that originally we only named hurricanes, extremely drastic weather. So by naming every low pressure zone, subliminally it makes it seem like the world's coming to an end.

Or, at the very least, the geniuses at The Weather Channel think that a crisis mentality with every other weather system will drive up ratings, which is insulting to humanity but probably correct.

I feel it's to prop up the climate change controversy.
