Syd Barrett & Rick Wright
'The loss of Syd Barrett and Rick Wright marked the end of two eras. Yet before Roger Waters and David Gilmour took control of the band it was Syd’s scribbly guitar and Rick’s fairy-tale keyboards that helped define the Pink Floyd sound. In different ways, both Syd Barrett and Rick Wright were let down by Pink Floyd. Neither really wanted to leave the group, yet both were forced to, leaving a nasty taste in the mouth, no matter how well Roger Waters and David Gilmour managed without them. Oh, Syd was mad, though, wasn’t he…? Actually, he had never been required to take medication specifically for his mental health. There was some speculation that he might have suffered from Asperger’s syndrome, a developmental disorder on the autism spectrum. Classic symptoms include difficulty with social interactions and incorrectly interpreting social cues. Asperger’s sufferers are often highly intelligent, just unconcerned with anything that doesn’t directly affect them ...'

Syd's band and Water's bands were different outfits really though, Syd's was a very British psych outfit and Rog's was a rather stodgy prog rock band. Always more of a Syd fan myself, although Animals is a great later era record. Could do without all the Water's "woe is me, isn't life hard for a multi millionaire rock store" stuff he forced on people with the interminably dull and over rated "Wall". Nice to see Mason/Pratt/Kemp reliving the early says with "Saucerful Of Secrets"

Have you seen the new documentary 'Have You Got It Yet? The Story Of Syd Barrett And Pink Floyd' (2023)? Might have some interesting footage that's been dusted off (and remastered), hopefully not another puff piece.

To be honest there have been so many pieces on the band and the different eras that I give the documentaries a wide berth now, same as most other major bands, the stories have been done to death. Would much rather see some on the other smaller outfits that get less coverage. From that era for example Gong and Daevid Allen and Gilli Smythe are crying out for a good documentary.

I've been listening to some 10CC albums since I arrived here, having kindly been welcomed among the wider refugee film community by Flying Monkeys, who's a fan of the band. A documentary on them could be interesting as band members have worked in different fields and had varied careers individually.

DARK SIDE OF THE MOON is the almost unanimous choice for the Pink Floyd "master piece" masterpiece, so whomever was active for that album would get noted as the "great men". True, MEDDLE had its greatness, but overall DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was classic after classic, so much so that the biggest hit was their weakest song of the album (Money).
And there was a lot of greatness in the experimental albums with songs like "Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict". But "Dark Side of the Moon" remains the acclaimed masterpiece.
Who was on the masterpiece album? David Gilmour Roger Waters Nick Mason Richard Wright

'Have You Got It Yet? The Story Of Syd Barrett And Pink Floyd' is currently screening on the channel SKY Arts. One impressive aspect is the contributions of old friends of Syd Barrett and the band. I enjoyed watching this documentary which features some great live footage and would recommend it to fans of Barrett's music, though it sheds little light on the subject at hand.
