Absolutely farcical, he's playing pub football whilst Haaland breaks scoring records in arguably the world's best team. Messi must have some very incriminating photos of some football bigwigs.

It's based on the 2022–23 season, though. Messi wasn't playing pub football at that time, he was winning the World Cup and Golden Ball. One last recognition for those accomplishments is understandable; he surely won't get another.

Sorry, his domestic season was no great shakes either compared to Haaland's, you can't seriously believe that he was deserving of this? Seemingly given for the World Cup Final, little more. Just makes a mockery of these things, as with a few World Cup's back when he was given player of the tournament after being pretty useless in it, even he looked embarrassed at that award. The World Cup and him shared the same sponsors though so no one was much surprised.

It's a journalist-driven award with an overinflated level of prestige; I don't particularly care one way or the other who won or why, I'm just offering some kind of explanation. It's no different from the endless "Hall of Fame" discussions that plague American sports - it honestly doesn't matter and fans place far too much importance on it.

I did my own thread on this titled "Why no one takes awards seriously any more." It's ridiculous.

And a few days ago Messi was awarded Time Magazine's Athlete of the Year. Last year's winner was Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees.
Simone Biles, Michael Phelps, LeBron James and the United States women's national team have all previously won the award.
