We meet Jake Chambers. A 10 year old boy from a contemporary city, apparently New York. He has been there for...he's not really sure, but '3 poops' ago. He is confused, scared, and somehow, unreasonably calm about just showing up. He remembers being killed in the city (pushed in front of a bus, by what seems to be our protagonist, the man in Black.
Rowland quickly develops a sort of liking for the boy. (Not that dirty kind of liking).
They prepare to leave the Weigh Station by gathering as much food and water as they can carry, and Rowland encounters a demon that warns him that the man in black will use Jake against him.
Roland and Jake set off into the desert, heading toward a mountain range where the man in black has gone.
There is another back flash story. Roland tells Jake about being a boy about Jake's age, in training to be a Gunslinger. His teacher was a harsh, mean instructor named Cort. Roland and his fellow apprentice, Cuthbert over hear a cook and a guard talking treason, turn them in to Rowland's father, and the cook gets hanged.
At the end of the chapter, they see the Man in Black, from a distance, going into the mountains.

After setting the trap through Syliva to poison Tull to Roland, he seems to have set a trap using Jake. This may explain why Roland instantly cares for the boy. Kind of like love at first sight but in a parental way. Roland at his core is a Romantic so that may also trigger the instant feelings for Jake. Thirdly the man has been alone for countless years. I'm always iffy on time in the Dark Tower as it's elastic. I believe it's been 12 years since the fall of Gilead and 5 years since The final battle at Jericho Hill. Since then Roland has been alone. But because time is so elastic, size, distance too those 12 years could be generations for others while only a decade for Roland. That could also play a part in the instant feelings. I personally think it's a combination of all 3.
The first time we get to see the hypnotic bullet trick. :)
We get to see how advanced the society was at one time. A nuclear powered pump. And it would have to be very small atomic generator as the machine wasn't huge.
North Central Positronics :)
We get introduced to Cuthbert Allgood. The class clown and kind of the foil for Roland in his youth. Roland was grim, steadfast, quick tempered, and unimaginative. where as Cuthbert is funny, sarcastic, quick to diffuse a situation (usually with humor) and creative.
You know in the revision they fixed the mule problem but not the Falcon/Hawk problem. When Roland first has David his lessons it says David is a Falcon. Every other time he is mentioned he is a Hawk.
I love how this book uses flashbacks. I don't know if it would work in a series/movie to rely on flashbacks. I mean it has worked and failed in the past. Lost did flashbacks great. The new The Stand series was clunky and worthless with it's use of flashbacks.
Do you like the relationship with Jake and Roland?
What did you think of Cort? Abusive asshole or the Teacher people need in a time of slow apocalypses?
What do you think of death being a conduit from our world to Rolands?

Shit forgot about Hax the cook and the hanging. It's kind of rough how Stephen orders his kid to go see a hanging, but I think it was good for him to do so. Rough world they live in and Stephen knew it would help the boy get over his friend betraying everyone.
We get one of my favorite lines in the series. "Ask not what the Good man can do for you, but what you can do for him."

I knew it was going to take a bit to get the ball rolling. I've talked we a few of you privately, but I wanted to see if you guys are still going strong. Monday we will start discussing Oracle and the Mountain. It's a short chapter. And the the following Monday the last 2 chapters. (Slow Mutants / The Gunslinger and Man in Black). I didn't really plan this but the last 2 chapters we will be reading Thanksgiving week/weekend. Do not think you have to read if you don't have time. Have fun with your families. I am serious with this being good for me, but it's reduced in priority for the moment. Sorry, and thanks.

After we finish the book we will discuss the whole work obviously. Then we will need to assess if everything is working the way we want it. The Dark Tower: The Drawing of the Three isn't broken up like The gunslinger is (in 5 parts) It's chaptered more traditionally. It's been a minute since I've read it. ONe of the things we should discuss would be is 60-70 pages and/or 2hours a week to little, to much, or just right. Keep that in mind as you are reading the last 3 sections of The Gunslinger.

Dude trust me I have Famil dinner this weekend, a Friendsgiving during the week, and The chica's family next weekend. I completely understand. That's one of the reasons I wanted everyone to check in. That's why I was ok with The Oracle and the Mountants to fall on the same week as Thanksgiving I think it's like 48 pages and/or 1hour and some change. A shorter chapter. You can catch up after tday. I will and I hope others will discuss it, so you can chime in when you've caught up. I would say just maybe skim here/check in here but don't read unless you want things spoiled for you :) edit: sorry Oracle and Mountains is in a few days... what we will be reading t-day week will be the last 2 chapters Slow Mutants/The Gunslinger and the man in black... Which is around 80 pages.

I read it so long ago, I never noticed the changes. But I'll take your word for it that it is clearer. I remember is was confusing the first time. I get the story better now.

But I'll take your word for it that it is clearer. I remember is was confusing the first time. I get the story better now. The main change I liked was him killing Allie as a mercy. Originally Roland was a lot less likable. Same basic premise Sheb holding Allie hostage, but their was no sub plot of her having the magic word of 19 to unlock Norts mind to the afterlife. He just killed her to out of reflex before he knew what he was doing originally. This way at least it was a mercy killing.
