The former England, Barcelona and Tottenham manager Terry Venables has died at the age of 80. Venables, who had a distinguished career as a player that brought two international caps, was in charge of England when they reached the semi-finals of Euro 96. “We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness,” read a statement from Venables’ family. “We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives.” Venables, known as El Tel after a spell at Barcelona during which he won La Liga and reached the European Cup final, had a successful, colourful and sometimes controversial career. Although he played more than 500 league games for Chelsea, Tottenham, Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace from 1960-1974, he is best known for his exploits as a manager. www.theguardian.com/football/2023/nov/26/terry-venables-former-england-spurs-and-barcelona-manager-dies-aged-80I actually thought he was already dead! Best motivator England ever had. Look at the piece of sh*t in charge now. There is a play currently running in London called Dear England. There is one scene where the Australian psychologist Pippa Grange gets some of the players to admit their failings. Then it's Southgate's turn. The set goes ghostly quiet as Southgate (played by Joseph Fiennes) goes into a long drawn-out monologue about his Euro 96 penalty miss. He attempts sincerity, remorse, pain - and he may well have felt all that. I also have the script. Let me set the scene with a few lines of Southgate's monologue.
"Ok, so like. My thing...that I'd like to share. Comes from what happened, when I played for England in '96...It was our biggest game in, like, thirty years. Penalties. All the other players before me, they all scored theirs, the first five. And Germany theirs. So it was sudden death" [note - that's not strictly true, is it. Sudden death is how the Golden Goal worked, no chance to reply to a conceded goal, unlike a penalty shootout where each team has an equal allocation of scoring chances, no?. Dramatic license maybe, for ill-informed theatregoers]
"The first player to miss - their team was out" [not necessarily, the opposing player, when he's second to take in running order, may also miss] "And there was a silence in our huddle. 'Who's gonna go next?' So I just - put my hand up. And I began that walk... I ran up, kicked the ball softly like - hah, so so soft. And the keeper rolled gently towards it. And I just wanted to disappear to the nearest Pizza Hut..."
Ok, those last five words I made up, but he continues for another couple of minutes reflecting on how bad it was for him etc.
Three months after all his pain that accompanied his penalty miss he appeared on TV with two other wankers - something he later claimed to regret : " it looked like I was 'cashing in' on the shootout failure." Aye, it did and you were. Fuck off.
edit ; also, Terry's scripts for TV show Hazell were superb, really illustrated the seedy aspects of private detection.
