Rabbis that I know teach that the universe is billions of years old.
The Jewish Calendar started after creation. The timeline after that is not meant to be a history book.

A belief in the supernatural will always be higher among the lesser educated, but that is forgetting how much is also down to indoctrination from a very early age. It is such a part of certain people's culture that it becomes a subject where rational thinking is ignored, even among otherwise very intelligent people. Some people also struggle with the idea of a cruel and uncaring chaotic universe/multiverse and like the comfort blanket of an orderly system placed upon it. Many rural societies revolve around it too, so that it is the whole fabric of that small enclosed world, church is the hub that all social life encircles, in those areas "Organised" religion is even more important than the religion part. But you think animals are gods not to be harmed so again quit the too cool for school act. |
