Newest film from my favourite living Japanese director. The widowed mother of a young teenager becomes worried when her son’s behaviour changes. Convinced that his teacher is mistreating him, she embarks in a campaign against the school. The structure of the movie is being described as “Rashomon-like”, but that is not entirely accurate – we do see the events happen three times from the point of view of the mother, the teacher and finally the boy, but it’s not a question of them misrepresenting the facts or recalling them differently. We just don’t have all the information to put all the pieces together until the end.
Not my favourite film from Kore-eda but a very good emotional drama. Well worth watching, and not just for unconditional fans of the director.
