It has range, a cutting weapon and a bludgeoning weapon so is effective against armour.
So if Flying Monkeys attacked me in full knight armour, I could take him down with a poleaxe.

The best medieval weapon was the idea that the barons only had to provide 40 days service to the king. The result was that, as often as not, by the time the troops had been rallied it was time to go home, which meant that warfare in the middle ages was usually about a few scuffles and a lot of hard negotiations

The best medieval weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise....
The best two medieval weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....
The best three medieval weapons are fear, and surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope....
The best four...no...
Amongst the best medieval weapons...are such elements as fear, surprise...
