A great NY sports guy. Very active with minor league teams in the NY area. RIP.
anecdote: couldn’t hit worth a lick, though. It’s just true. Great glove, smart player, not a hitter. The only guy to be on the field in uniform during the Mets 2 WS wins, 1969 and 1986. One as a player, the other as a 3rd base coach.

Almost every SS in the late 60's-early 70's couldn't hit their weight. Ray Oyler, Dal Maxvill, Gene Alley, Ron Hansen, Don Kessinger, Dave Conception. But Harrleson's defense was good enough to earn MVP votes in three years.
He was my mother's favorite player, don't know why. She was a Met fan since 1962 (quit on the in the 80's, when they got too cocky). The only time she ever got drunk was when the Mets won the WS in 1969. I had a history professor in college who said "Anything and everything in history can be logically explained. Except the 1969 Mets.

Yes, non hitting SS’s were ‘a thing’ during my early years of watching. For every ONE Ernie Banks, there seemed to be 20 Conceptions, etc. I guess 2nd base took second place in the ‘he doesn’t really have to hit’ department in those days. 1st and 3rd guys had some pop, usually. Didn’t the White Sox have a HOF SS during the 50’s-60’s who could hit? Aparicio, maybe? A smidgen before my time. Cheers to Mom and the 69 Mets!

They were few and far between. It was strange when Robin Yount and Paul Molitor came up. "holy shit, these guys can really hit". They broke the ice, followed by Ripken, A-rod, Jeter etc

Alan Trammell could really hit too. There were others who came up in the mid 70's who could hit. Trammell, Ivan DeJesus, Garry Templeton, Ozzie Smith
