This is probably why the original stations used tiles. Transport for London (TfL) is exploring new ways of dealing with "ghost marks" on the walls of Elizabeth line's platforms.
The marks behind platform benches are caused by people leaning against the walls.

Could just remove the seats. The older I get the more I love seats. It's definitely a failure of the designers that they didn't know that the material they chose could get so easily stained by people. Eewww, stained.

The new stations are lovely but someone definitely messed up along the way. I also wish someone would tidy up the footbridge at Ilford station. It’s very shoddy and the signage is badly placed.

The position in which someone would have to sit to leave marks like that on a wall that slants inward seems damned uncomfortable. If there are chiropractors at stops on that line, they should do robust business.
